Breaking news: Kidnapped boys found!
Filed under: Teens, Health & Safety: Babies, Media
Five days ago, William Ownby disappeared from his school bus stop. A friend said he saw a white pickup truck with a camper shell speeding away from where Ownby had last been seen. A search was mounted but to no avail. The break came when police in a town 60 miles away spotted a truck matching the description. They searched the truck owner's home and found not only William Ownby, but Shawn Hornbeck as well.Shawn Hornbeck went missing four years ago when he was eleven years old. His parents have kept looking for him and even started an organization to help bring other missing children home. Now, he's been found, alive and apparently well. The owner of the home, 41-year-old Michael Devlin, has been arrested and charged with first-degree kidnapping. More charges are likely to follow.
As I read this story, I couldn't help but wonder what it must be like for Hornbeck's parents now. After so many years of doing everything they could, and doing their best not to give up hope, to have him found alive must be overwhelming beyond comprehension. I am so very happy for all the parents and both boys, even as I feel equal hatred and disgust at the man responsible.

Gigohead said...I was hopeful the boy would be found alive. I have a son his age and I worry when he has to go to school by himself. I was thinking of getting my 12 year old a cell phone, but I worried about the bills. If something should happen at least my boy can be traced with the phone.

I am a nanny and I can't tell you how it breaks my heart to hear of children disappearing and to hear a story where not only one but two children were brought back to their parents alive is practically a miracle in this day and age. Hopefully the children weren't mistreated, and if they were they are getting good counseling to overcome the trauma.
On another note, to commenter Gigohead, you mention getting your son a cell phone; you could get a pay as you go phone where you buy the minutes and he only uses it in emergencies. There are also other phones out there now geared toward younger children where the phone only has a few buttons so that it cannot be abused and run up a large bill. It's definately a good idea and even at 23 years old my parents swear by my cell phone so they can keep in daily contact with me lol.
