Corn causes tantrums?
Categories: Eating & Nutrition, Development
Corn syrup is one of the hardest things to avoid. It's used as an inexpensive sweetener in 90 percent of the processed food on grocery store shelves. Virtually every regular soda uses it. A majority of breads even contain it. We've been avoiding it because it's one of the three major allergens. (Wheat(gluten), Corn and Dairy)Archer's recent allergy test didn't show much in the way of corn problems, but our allergist noted that the test isn't very sensitive. Believe it or not, food allergies - even mild ones can cause behavior problems in children. Today we took a chance and checked to see if corn really was a problem. We let archer have some gluten free cookies that use quite a bit of corn products to replace the wheat.
Tonight she was definitely not acting like herself. She was hungry, but before she even got her food she ran off and slammed the door behind her. It's hard to say that corn is definitively the problem, but when we cut it out of her diet she barely ever behaved like this. It's safe to say that we're going to keep avoiding it for now.

This is interesting, I was just reading about the fact that Coke (US) uses corn syrup as a sweetener but Coke (Canada) uses sugar, and that this is true for a lot of candy/cookies too. This is attributed to the cheaper cost of sugar in Canada and "corn subsidies" in the US.

I have no idea if this has anything to do with what you're experiencing, but I've seen several news stories lately about how most of the corn we get now is genetically engineered... to be bigger, "better" than natural corn. Mayber try organic?
Corn syrup is in alot of stuff, snack foods, etc. High fructose corn syrup, etc. That's going to be a tough one to avoid!

We're in the same boat here as far as food insensitivity. My son is allergic/sensitive to dairy, corn, soy and wheat. So far, we've done really well with him since his problems started shortly after he was born, so he's never had a taste for any of those foods (thank god!).
There's a brand of allergen free food called "Enjoy Life" that makes some absolutely wonderful cookies and snackfoods that are free of the top 8 allergens (including corn). My son can have them just fine. They use sorghum flour for most of their cookies.
Also, if you do any cooking/baking yourself, you must find Bette Hagman's "Gluten Free Gourmet" cookbooks. She gives a great overview of all of the flours available to your disposal for gluten-free cooking. A helpful note based on my own personal experience, make a batch of cookies and freeze them. Then you can pull a couple out at a time and microwave them. Works like a charm in our house.
It is very difficult to go without gluten and corn, but with some trial and error, you'll probably be just fine.
Another FYI, also from my own experience, I was allergic to oats (hives) as a kid and am sensitive to wheat and corn as an adult. They're all genetically similar, all grasses. As your daughter gets older, if she develops asthma or hay fever, grasses may be a culprit.
GOOD LUCK!!!

European foods tend to use cane sugar or beet sugar so those are alternatives as well.
My sister is allergic to corn and she gets hives, breathing problems , acne and mood swings as well. It is in everything Even canned broth! She can drink coke but not Sprite/ 7-up type drinks. I thought Candian Coke had corn in it I guess if doesn't that is why she is ok with it. I think it is used so much partially because of the American ban on goods from Cuba which is a big exporter of Sugar cane. They ned and alternitve and probaly gave subsiedies for corn farms. Most of the corn you see isn't the edible kind but the kind used for cooking ( I was told there was difference)
I have an allergy to Oranges and get breathing problems and sever mood swings even if I smell it. If I eat tomatoes/ products I get acne.
