Medicine-dispensing pacifier
Categories: Safety
When Jared had strep throat a year ago and we had so much trouble getting medicine into him, he was already too old for this spiffy medicine dispenser, but when he was an infant, it sure would have helped. Basically, this is a pacifier that holds a dose of liquid medicine.Your baby sucks on Kidz-Med Medicine Dispenser like a normal pacifier, self-administering the medicine. No muss, no fuss. If your kid doesn't suck, it also features a plunger so you can deliver the medicine manually. At about $6, this seems like a pretty good idea. Anyone have any experience with these? Do they work as well as they would seem to?

Yes, they do! The one I had didn't have a plunger, so we just tilted him back a little and it poured right down. I'd forgotten about these! I have a 4 month-old now, so I'm going to run out and get one again!

We used this for our son when we were giving him calpol, it is brilliant!!
He was used to the normal dummy (pacifier) so using this didn't cause him any upset.
It's something I have recommended time and time again to other parents.

Why not just put the medicine into a normal bottle nipple and give it to them that way?
My son was on various medications (2 or 3 bitter doses a day) until he was 1, and the only thing that worked for us was putting it into a nipple he was familiar with and giving it to him. We tried a few medicine dispensers, including one that looked almost exactly like this one, and they would work once or twice, until he learned to associate it with medication. Then, he wouldn`t even let me put it in his mouth, let alone suck on it. The normal nipples never failed us as their association with warm yummy milk was never outweighed by the icky bits.

I would think that if you're trying to break the binky habit, this would be ideal. I'm sure my kids would have absolutely nothing to do with this thing once they realized that yucky stufff came from it. It's probably worth a try, though, since I've wasted quite a bit of medicine trying to get into reluctant (ha! now, there's an understatement!) mouths.
