Are you smarter than a fifth grader?

The Fox television network is preparing a new game show that will make every parent of a pre-teen quake in their boots, asking grown-up contestants to complete a quiz consisting of questions from elementary school textbooks. According to Peter Liguori, president of Fox entertainment, "While most game shows measure how smart you are, this is a show that will measure how dumb you are."Just to make sure there is plenty of adult humiliation, there will be kids on hand to help out in a pinch -- and to ridicule the contestants. Players will start out with $100,000, but will have to gamble that money on a series of general knowledge questions. "It's amazing how much you forget from grade school," says Mike Darnell, a Fox VP. "My understanding is that every (network) exec who played the game during the pitch meetings ended up with zero dollars at the end."
I imagine that parents would do well, being in the position of helping their kids with their homework. On the other hand, I can barely remember my kids' names -- do they really expect me to be able to remember the colors in the rainbow?

Stan Tott said...On the March 1st show, one of the questions was:- What is the largest bear? The answer given was the Polar Bear. But according to two reference books that I have, the correct answer is the Brown Bear(Kodiak). All the North American bears are listed from the smallest to the largest.Namely:- Black bear,Grizzly bear,Polar bear and then the Brown bear(Kodiak).Could you please verify this for me?Thank you Stan Tott

Uncle Roger said...According to the Wikipedia, "Kodiak bears are the largest type, and in fact one of the largest extant carnivores, though polar bears are the heaviest." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear#Physical_attributes)
The Library of Congress, on the other hand, goes with the Polar Bear, noting the vagueness of the criteria involved in identifying the "largest". (http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/bear.html)
Hope that helps.
