New Orleans looking for a few good teachers
Filed under: Day Care & Education
If you're a teacher looking for a job and a bit of a challenge, some New Orleans schools would like to speak with you.The schools, which were already having troubles before Hurricane Katrina hit, are in a desperate situation. According to some school officials, some of the high school freshmen do not know how to read, teens will go missing for days and fights happen on campus.
Teachers must pass a basic skills test before starting their jobs. Salaries for elementary and high school teachers start at $36,900 a year. Half of the pre-Katrina students are back in schools and the districts are looking for ways to help teachers find housing.
Officials are hoping to find teachers that are looking for a "Peace Corps" type of experience who want to help rebuild the city.

Stephanie said...Not only are the schools in New Orleans just overcrowded, 300 students have just been put on a "waitlist" to get into the few public schools that are open right now. Can you imagine a child being denied a public education in this country? Many school buildings were flooded so there are fewer schools to teach in, and so many teacher's houses were flooded, they can't come back yet to the city.
Housing is a major issue for recuiting teachers. There are actually apartments for rent now, but the rent is higher than you might expect for the space. Crime is also an issue for recuiting. It wasn't that great before Katrina and with the cops stretched thin, the situation is going from bad to worse. Comparing this to a "Peace Corps" kind of experience is not that far off from the truth.
The city and the people are worth the effort to help, but still are struggling to rebuild a year and a half later. If you look at the text from the President's recent State of the Union address, you will not find the word Katrina listed. In fact, hurricane recovery was not mentioned at all as a part of the state of this country today. Anyone coming into New Orleans or the gulf south right now to be a teacher would be more than a Saint in my opinion, they would be an angel.
