Where do you go for unisex baby clothes?

Two of my girlfriends are due to have babies soon: one in the early spring and one any minute now, my god, how did that pregnancy go by so fast?. So today I ducked into the mall to pick up some last minute baby gifts because I am a bad friend and prone to procrastination. I shop better under pressure. I do!
Anyway, neither of my friends know the gender of their baby. I know, that's a rarity in this day and age, but they don't. I popped into Zara, where Nolan weaved in and out of racks full of filmy wrap dresses and I asked the salesgirl," Can you point me toward the unisex baby clothes?" She pointed at a shelf of sweaters with letters on them. Three sweaters. Ugly ones. No. I pried Nolan from the legs of an alarmed-looking teenager and exited the store.
I exited, and tried Old Navy. No luck: only boys or girls clothes. Huh. All I wanted was a comfy white onesie, or some soft green caps. No pink, no blue, no trucks, no dolls. Just baby.
Finally, I landed in Gymboree, which also had no specific unisex section, but did have a newborn section with a distinct lack of gender-specific clothing.
I settled on the "Under The Sea" onesie with matching blanket and hat. It featured an octopus and a soft orange colour, entirely gender neutral, very cute, and super soft. I didn't realize it was so difficult to find neutral baby clothes. One more reason that knowing the baby's sex can be so convenient.

Laura said...I love Carter's clothes- they are cute without being cloying and they are such a good value. I am about to have my 2nd child (another boy) and all of the clothes from my 1st child are still in great condition and timeless. They have a lot of great unisex clothing- I knew the sex of my first child but I was paranoid that the ultrasound would be wrong (even though it was extremely obvious he was a boy) so I bought a lot of yellow and green things.

I wouldn't put a newborn baby girl in a yellow romper with giraffes on it - but for a boy? Sure! The under the sea outfit you picked is adorable, but more for a baby boy in my opinion. If it were me, I'd probably just gift some basics - white onesies, baby bath towels, and maybe a baby toy. I'm 11 weeks pregnant with my 3rd baby and I'm just dying to find out what we're having. I don't know how people can stand to "be surprised!" In a way, I admire their patience!

My son hashow n both trucks and dolls, and cuddly toys/blankies etc in both pink and blue. Were he a girl he would own exactly the same things he does now.
A newborn baby doesn't know there is a physical difference between men and women, let alone that those differences mean that he/she will be expected to act in a certain way based solely on how many X chromosomes they have. Why put them in gender boxes so early?

Dawn said...I have to say Target was the best place we found gender neutral clothing. I have a boy, my friend is having a girl, and I gave her lots of Ryan's old clothes (I tear up thinking how he used to wear premie and newborn clothes) that work great for a boy or girl. Lots of our stuff was handed down, but most of it was Target or Carter's. The colors we have mainly besides blue are : red, yellow, green, white and brown.

I also have a ton of hand-me-downs from my sister who has a girl and a boy and I must say, I prefer a lot of the "boy" clothes. There is a primary colored striped turtleneck onsie and red fleace pants that I bought for my nephew that has been handed down that I love on her. One of my other favs is an orange and white striped romper I got from a Gap outlet. All ahe pink can get a little neauseating after awhile and these other colors are a nice break. I also love her in bold blues (think french blue) and white.
BTW - I love that "Stripe Crab One-Piece" you got...I might have to go shopping...!

To this day I find it hard to wear pink..partly just because it pisses me off so much that my gender is supposed to wear it. Why would I saddle my daughter with the restrictive idea that all she can wear is "girly" stuff?? It's hard to dress kids all that far outside what society considers acceptable, but at least we can try not to be slaves to the "sports for boys, princess for girls" on so much kids' clothes these days.
don't get me started..this topic drives me nuts :)
