More evidence that Bratz are bad girls

In a report released Monday, the American Psychological Association confirmed what I already knew. In short, exposure to all those commercials, movies, songs, toys and advertisements featuring scantily clad females is harmful to a young girl's emotional and physical health.
The report was based on an analysis of some 300 studies over the past 18 months and indicated that these sexualized images can result in young girls viewing themselves as sex objects.
While they weren't the only toys singled out, the mention of Bratz dolls in this report got my attention. These dolls, popular with girls as young as 4, wear skimpy clothing, hang out in hot tubs and party with the "Boyz". With their pumped-up lips and heavy makeup, they look as if they belong in a brothel -- not a little girl's toy chest.
Of course, Isaac Larian, CEO of Bratz doll manufacturer MGA entertainment disagrees with the report's judgment of the Bratz dolls. He says that girls across the USA are wearing the same type of clothing and that they are not sexy. Yes, girls everywhere are dressing like that. Which begs the question of which came first, the Bratz dolls or the sexed-up school girls?
Bratz dolls have been banned from our house since Ellie was old enough to want one. She thinks they are pretty. I think they are offensive. She has given up asking for one because she knows it isn't going to happen. Clearly lots of parents have no issue with these dolls; millions have been sold worldwide. I can't help but wonder why. With so many non-slutty dolls available, why would a parent allow Bratz in the house?

The bratz doll reminds me of a spoiled rich girl and I will never buy one for my daughter. I'm not going to give into the conterversy and let her take the place of barbie!! Plus, Barbies started coming out with career dolls. So what is the bratz career?? Can you guess??

Anders said...I can't get over the over analysis of everything in today's world. I am the father of twin 5 year old girls. They love the Bratz and I don't have a problem with that. Maybe instead of just forbidding these dolls you could take time out to be a real parent and explain to your girls why it is important to believe in themselves, have self confidence, and explain they are more than what they look like. If a toy is influencing the way your daughter views herself, then you are not doing your job as parents.

Mom of 2 said...Kathy (#18), I have to totally agree with you. I also did not like the way the BRATZ girls looked at first (I thought their big heads made them look like aliens!). But I have gotten over that because of my daughter's love of them. Of course, we still carefully look AT them and pick more positive ones (gymnast, ice skater, skiier) to promote good sports and health, but we have some fun ones, too. But even when we purchase a "fun" one, I have never had the problem of my daughter wanting to dress or act like the doll.
My best example is the Bratz head she received for Christmas (similar to the Barbie one of yesteryear that we used to do her hair and makeup). Now my daughter plays with her all the time, putting on glitter eye shadow, lipstick and blush, painting her nails, etc. Yet, she has NEVER even tried to put it on herself. I think it has more to do with parenting and rules than anything else.
Anyway ... whose child would really like to emulate the Bratz by having HUGE, OVERSIZED heads and lips and a disproportionate size skinny, lanky body with HUGE feet. Not my idea of a beauty queen.

Dinah said...Oh my gosh is all I can say.....what the heck is the matter with people anymore? Where does this thinking come from? I am 60 yrs old and I will be darned if I know what the heck has happened to this society anymore....all this fuss over a doll......
Secondly, since when has "sexy" become a bad thing? Oh.....I forgot...anyone who has sex is bad....or anyone that wears "sexy" clothes asked to be raped....Or gosh forbid someone talks about "sex" as this is a sin.......but trying to say that a bratz doll is going to do all this to your child is pathetic.
A child comes into this world free of all thoughts of anger, hatred, bigotry, discrimination, prejudices, yet by the age of 3 the majority of kids know these kind of things..
To me personally anyone who teaches an innocent child to think such things should be charged with child abuse as to teach hatred, racism, discrimination toward another human being is wrong.
Yet all these stupid crap over a darn doll who is wearing what teenagers wear......and the more you say you aren't allowed to have something, the more it becomes wanted.
To all the parents who turn their TV's off at the mere image of sexuality, your just making it into something that it isn't.
All commercials are based with selling and you don't see any heavy people in the commercials...you see skinny, made up, showing just about all to sell a product.....yet all the fuss again over a dumb doll.
Why not have this much interest in the war, homelessness, hungry battered abused children. Minimum wage not increased, yet politician's have had 8 I think pay raises in the past 4 yrs.....
Give me a break and get down to what is important other then a daymn doll that is making children have fun playing dress up, or letting their imagination be innocent....with all the fuss going on about this darn doll......now they will wonder what is going on.....
Do any of you smothering mom's remember sneaking into your mothers room and putting on her fancy clothes? High Heels, lipstick?
Most of all it is even sadder that some parents of today's society are letting their children have plastic surgery for their faces, lips, tummies, butt's when they haven't even reached the age of 10 yet....now that is something to think about as serious, other then a dumb, fun playing doll.
Going to the store now to buy a bratz doll for my g/daughters who just happen to think they are fun to play with and they are not buried in thinking anything sexual is going to happen with a make believe doll..
Thank heavens my sons and their wives are not buried in the stereo type of parents who think that their kids ought to be hidden from the real world, yet at the same time are teaching them respect, manners, morals, and not to be stuck up in the mud over the bull crap of a bratz doll being anything then a doll.

And NO I do not dress like that and my oldest daughter knows what she is and isn't allowed to wear and she doesn't even ask for clothing like that. Don't you think that there is more to worry about than what other parents allow THEIR children to play with?

Alaina said...I don't like some of the outfits the dolls wear, but they are dolls and there are other dolls besides BRATZ that dress that way. It would be nice if they were dressed more like girls since that is who they are made for. I don't necessarily hate them nor would I boycott them but some wardrobe changes would be much better.. Toys don't make our children we do, so it is up to the parent but not for finger pointing over a toy..we have more pressing issues regarding our children lately.

Oh, now that's a product of the GOVERNMENT, and, yes, should more definately be completely taken off the market than bratz.
The pregnant barbie is married, by the way...her family is just sold separately.

Aligabsmum said...I have a 5-year-old & 2-year-old daughter and refuse to buy them BRATZ, My Scene or any other nasty doll that is marketed for them. I dont even buy them Barbies. Last year in Wal-Mart they had a set of dolls made by Matel that was called "We Three Friends." It was young Barbie like dolls - fully clothed - even in the mid drift. There was a pajama party set, a outdoor set (dressed in raincoats and such) they each came with a pet and there were so many accessories (toothbrushes, pretend books, REAL tiny tiny playing cards, pretend pizzas (we got the slumber party one for my oldest)). We love these dolls. She isn't getting some horrible unethical, immoral message, she isn't falling prey to the evil marketing giants with those other dolls and she is still having fun. As far as those who beleive that your child is exempt from falling prey or don't beleive it...I bet you also buy your 7-year-old the thongs that A&F markets for kids as young as 5 or 6. And I bet you buy them the belly baring shirts and you think it is okay because they "look cute," or are to young to make anything of it. You are so delusional and so sadly informed. Probably because you don't want to face the fact that you yourself should not be wearing the same style clothing, but don't want to take a stand and be a good role model for your child. Apparence says a lot - and it doesn't matter if you bought the clothes for $5 at Wal-Mart or $50 at the mall - price doesn't seperate you from being sold out!

Suzy said...Bratz dolls are just hideous! But it's not just their scanty clothing. Why is it acceptable for a girl to wear a bikini to the beach or pool in broad daylight, but if a that same girl's club clothing at night reveals as much flesh, then she's branded a whore? It's a very real paradox in our society. Barbie has worn a bikini since the 70's and she's acceptable. Yes, Barbie wore short skirts too. So there's something else that we don't like about these dolls. It's the behavior that we associate with the scanty clothing that we don't like. It's also the segment of the population that the dolls resemble that I think we don't like. It's a segment that is not thought of as particularly bright.

When you see me, are you going to say I look like a BRATZ wh*re? OFW!!! I hope you do...because it just proves who is really the judgemental one, now doesn't it! Because, I am a faithful wife, a loving mother and respectful citizen to all who know me...and, if I ever have a little girl, she'll know that dolls are dolls and clothes are made for all occasions, ages and people of all kinds. And, I will be the one to help her grow into her own style.

Leslie said...I have always found Bratz dolls offensive. There was never an outcry of disdain with Barbie in the 1970's. That is because Barbie has never been offensive. With every decade, there appears to be an increased level of acceptance with regard to social behavior. Thus, one would assume that Bratz in 2007 would be acceptable. However, more often than not, they are the source of great objection. Ahhh, if we could just embrace goodness and wholesome behvaior by treating children as they are...KIDS vs. premature adults! Parents perpetuate a child's exposure. Parents have the responsibility to guide their children. Parents, thus, should treat their chidlren, like kids and leave the overly sexual and completely inappropriate Bratz dolls on the store shelve vs. in their CHILD'S toy chest.

Josh said...I think this entire issue is just a waste of time, emotion and thought. I realize that yes, the bratz dolls look like utter sl*ts, and if i had a kid there is no way i would want her to think of the doll as a role model. But did you, the mother, ever look at your [insert type here] barbie doll and think, "when i grow up, i want to be just like you barbie!"...signs point to no. It seems to me like this entire article is just one more way for parents, who have so little to control in their everyday lives, to control the one thing they have control over, their kids. Sure, maybe you just don't think that buying the dolls are a good investment cuz they are hella pricy, and i respect that, but not one person said they wouldn't buy it for that fact. The majority of the people in here should understand that there is no lesson to teach your kids greater than the fact that they are born into a world where they can and do have personal freedom. Why would you want to take that away from them?
And as an afterthought, if only the people on this forum would spend a little more time commenting on stuff that actually matters, like government policy, economic freedom and global affairs because it is THESE that you CAN change to make better for your children, and it is a much better gift to give them a world without suffering than a doll that is politically correct.

The same moms have matching JUICY on their ass with their 7 year old daughter and think its fashionable advertise a childs rear. Why not tatoo the same tramp stamp on your kids lower back? Stop planting your kids in front of the boob tube and teach them that being smart and polite is how you suceed in life and a brat is a bad thing.

The Voice of Reason said...I have an idea. Why don't we actually pay attention to studies and research? If we present children with the perceptions, expectations, and regard that we want them to have of themselves, then they will strive for that because of the self-fulfilling prophesy set before them. If we surround them with positive role models and expectations of themselves, then they will grow up as such instead of having the notion that they must play the game that everyone else is playing with no idea of appropriateness or respect for themselves.
