Is the hiccup girl faking?
Filed under: Teens, Health & Safety: Babies, Media
The other day, I saw a preview for a TV show that would be featuring an interview with "the hiccup girl", a 15-year-old who has had the hiccups 50 times a minute, every day for almost a month.I had to turn away quickly, because short of being trapped in a mothball-scented elevator for a year or having my eyelashes pulled out one by one, I can't think of much I'd like less than a whole lot of forceful, all encompassing hiccups.
Apparently, the severity of the hiccups for young Jennifer Mee has been so intense that doubters have been cropping up, wondering about their authenticity. Though Jennifer has admittedly enjoyed the national attention arising from her hiccups, she said "If I was faking it, I would have stopped four weeks ago."
Doctors are flummoxed by her case, and so am I. Pickle juice and breathing in upside down paper bags haven't worked yet, but I hope something works for her soon. I really don't think she's faking it.

SL said...She doesn't do it when she is talking. I have had them recently and it happens no matter what I am doing. Drinking, talking, eating.....I hate to say it but I think it is fake.

Ginny said...How was she to know she'd get on national TV from hiccuping? She also says it's painful. I doubt she's faking it. Anything's possible tho.

BeEl said...I have heard her on the radio (she lives in my area). One thing that she said that I found puzzling was that when she sleeps, the hiccups stop. I thought that was really bizarre.

Uly said...Not really, BeEl. That, and the "stops when she talks bit" seems to me that if she's not faking it, it may be psychsomatic - a real condition that starts because of things going on in the mind, not anything physical. It's real, but not in the same way that a broken bone is.
