Picture perfect: Getting good shots of your kids
Filed under: That's Entertainment
I only rarely take my kids for professional photographs because, quite honestly, it's always such a nightmare. The last time we took them to a professional, they were so busy playing with the big prop car that we couldn't get them to look at the camera. The session cost me a fortune and there wasn't one good shot in the whole bunch. Argh.
Instead, I keep my camera in my bag all the time and just snap away where ever we happen to be. But I'm always trying to figure out how to get really great quality photos on the fly from my wee little digital camera.
Chris, of Notes from the Trenches, recently posted the first in a series of pieces on Taking Good Photographs at her other blog, In the Trenches of Motherhood. My favorite of her suggestions is that you "Get in closer.... closer. Rarely do you see photographs where people are too close to the subject." Chris accompanies her post with terrific examples of shots of her kids (who are adorable, if you haven't noticed).
I also get a lot of inspiration and helpful hints from Tracey Clark's blog, Picture This. Tracey, a photographer and writer and mom of two little girls, combines beautiful prose with incredible pictures and practical tips for making your shots look like hers. Tracey offers advice about everything from posing your subject to what kind of camera to buy to how to edit photos after you've taken them.
I find that the easiest way to get good pictures is just to keep shooting. And shooting. And shooting. Eventually, you'll get that one picture you've been looking for.
What tips do YOU have for picture-perfect shots of your kids?

Another article of theirs, "How To Be A Curious Photographer", while not specifically about photographing children, also has some great tips which can be applied to family photos: http://digital-photography-school.com/blog/how-to-be-a-curious-photographer/
There's also a BRILLIANT blog called "Shooting The Kids" which is all about photographing children: http://shootingthekids.dpblogs.com/

Rachel May said...My favorite tip is to get on the floor! Be on their level. Don't try to take a picture standing up or even sitting on a chair. Even cooler sometimes is to take pictures from *below* their level.
Sorry I won't be posting examples anywhere - I'm just leery of posting pics of my kiddo online. :)

Eugene Chan said...If you shoot with digital, show your subject the photo after you take it.
It makes them interested in the photo, gives you feedback, and usually elicits a smile--or a quick "ugh" face.
