Should this drunken pirate be teaching your kids?
Filed under: Day Care & Education
Once again, someone's MySpace profile comes back to the haunt them. Although, in this circumstance, it seems a rather innocuous photo has been blown way out of proportion.
The picture at right is of Stacy Snyder. It was taken during a 2005 Halloween party, and posted on her MySpace page with the label "Drunken Pirate."
It's also the reason Millersville University officials refused to issue her a bachelor of science degree in education and teaching. The day before she was set to graduate, Snyder was told she'd instead be getting a bachelor of arts degree in English, because -- while she'd been given "competent" or "superior" ratings in every other area -- the photo made her "professionalism" rating "unsatisfactory." She was also told the photo promoted underage drinking.
While it probably wasn't the best idea ever to leave that up on her MySpace page, it certainly doesn't promote anything except cheap Halloween costumes, and hardly makes her unworthy of educating young people. All I can think of is that the school has some personal issue with Snyder that they're going to great lengths to pretend is something else.
In any case, she's filed a federal lawsuit, asking for the right to teach and $75,000 in damages. I hope she gets both.

One of my college instructors would tell us if he was wearing his glasses it's probably because he had a hangover. You can't make people afraid to be themselves to their friends and family. This is why my myspace page is set to private, eventhough it's just mostly pictures of my baby girl, I feel people don't need to see anything I don't approve them to see.

Sadie said...This is really stupid. She was 24/25 when the photo was taken so it's not promoting underage drinking - you don't even know what she IS drinking. It's solely the caption alone, and the fact that she was student-teaching at a high school? Ridiculous.

Miss said...I will give my pinky nail if that person in the picture is 20-something. Before I read the article, I was sure this was a 40-something male. That is not a girl, and certainly not a young one!!!

I think the same goes for the internet. The young folks are not using their brains when creating all these personal items on the internet.
No, I don't think that your drinking preferences should determine your abilties. But even I (in a stable career) know that businesses and other organizations now make internet surfing part of their background checks.
Hopefully she learned a lesson.

So if the caption of the picture was the issue, then the nature of the complaint the college had is even more ridiculous than it seemed initially to those of us far enough away to not immediately spot the reference to her having fun with her school mascot. Note the gif image about 2/3 of the way down this page on the college site, center right:
