Five bucks for kids

Filed under: In The News, Playground Bureau, Media

I received an email yesterday from my blog friend Karen Rani of Troll Baby. Her good friends are embarking on a mission to Swaziland at the end of the month to volunteer their time, supplies, and money. Astonishingly, 70% of the country makes less than $ 1.00 a day. Poverty and AIDS are rampant.

Karen's friends have a special interest in donating to a children's orphanage, and I have to admit, it's a cause close to my heart. My best friend Mel is in Africa now, and her stories and video footage of the spirited children in orphanages in Uganda are never far from my thoughts.

Among the items that can make a difference to kids who have nothing but hope are:
  • Flipflops
  • Board Games
  • Toothbrushes
  • Energy Bars/Fruit Bars
  • Cash
I know from Mel that a little cash (in our countries, anyway) can go a long way, and you can also make a cash donation from a box linked from Karen's site. Karen's asking for five bucks - a chai tea latte at Starbucks. I think I can afford that to help place a smile on a little one's face. Kudos to Karen's friends Jenn and Chris for pursuing their passion and making the earth just a little better.
