Jared's new bed

Filed under: Preschoolers, Big Kids, Development/Milestones: Babies, Decor

For Jared's fifth birthday, we got him a new bed -- the one pictured here. We like the fact that it combines clothes storage, a work area, and the bed in one unit with effectively the same footprint as a more traditional bed. The fact that it includes a trundle bed at the bottom is cool; it will make it easy to have friends stay over. There is also a storage area at the back that runs the full length of the bed -- Jared and Sara love to hide in there, doing who knows what. What kid doesn't love a secret hiding place? I picked up some battery-powered, stick-up lights and put one in there for them. The bed wasn't cheap, but we have hopes it will last him many, many years.

While Rachel had some concerns about the kids falling -- or more likely, jumping -- off the top, that hasn't happened, and so far, they don't seem too inclined to give it a try. Thus far, Jared has split his time pretty evenly between the top bunk and the trundle. We're trying to limit his sleeping on the bottom to when he's sick (and thus needs easy access to the bathroom and to us.) So far, we -- especially Jared -- have been quite happy with the bed.

Jared knows that I write for ParentDish and wanted a chance to do the same. So I sat down with my laptop and he told me all about his bed. Here, then, is Jared's thoughts on his new bed:

"It's called a loft bed. I like the bottom and the top. I just like to reach the light. We just go on top. But not Sara. There is a mattress on top. It is so soft. On the bottom, when I'm sick, I sleep on the bottom. There's a mattress.

"There's a store that's called Mattress Discounters. We just bought a mattress. It's so super tall. We put the clothes in the drawers. My bed has drawers on it so it's different. It connects together. It has a desk.

"It has a storage. We go inside it. Sara can only go in there. And me too. We have a ladder. The bed is really, really hard. But there are mattresses; they're soft. It was a gift because I needed a bigger bed and a bigger mattress. It was a birthday gift.

"It's good. The end."
