"Lord of the Flies" comes to reality television

Producers at CBS aren't keen on comparing their new reality show, tentatively titled Kid Nation, to William Golding's classic novel Lord of the Flies, but the similarities are definitely there. In Golding's novel, a group schoolboys fend for themselves while stranded on a deserted island with no adults. On the new show, which may make it on the fall schedule, 40 kids ages 8 to 15 have 40 days to create and run their own town with no adult supervision. Set in Bonanza City, N.M., the show will follow the children as they create their own government, care for themselves, run their own businesses and resolve their own disputes.
The producers aren't saying where the kids' parents are during the six-week shoot, but I can't imagine they are too far away. The show, like the novel, is a fascinating concept, but I can't help but wonder what kind of psychological damage this situation might have on a child. And I am sure the producer's reluctance to compare this show to Lord of the Flies has something to do with the fact that in that story, the children's attempt to govern themselves fails miserably and the group descends into anarchy and violence. Should be interesting.
