What's YOUR official start of summer?

What is? Well, at our house it's the First Buzz Cut of the Season.
Yesterday I took the kids and had their hair cut--buzzed down for the summer heat. Halfway through his turn, Charlie looked in the mirror and yelled "I LOVE MY HAIR!" Then he spent the entire afternoon rubbing his head and saying, "Next time, can I just be bald instead?"
I love the short summer buzz; my kids are outside all the time, and having their hair short keeps them cooler. It's also easier to wash and easier to apply sunscreen (I rub in right into their hair--yes, really!). And honestly, I think they're both so cute with their little velveteen hair.
Today when we woke up, the sun was shining, for the first time in a week. At breakfast, Henry said, "I think it's finally summer." I think he's right.
Do you do anything special to mark the start of summer?

When I was a young girl in Maryland, summer really did begin around Memorial Day, which where I come from means gathering at together to watch horse races. It meant the start of eating hard shelled crabs, drinking lemonade (and beer, for some). But, here in PA, I'm not sure what starts summer, other than the striking heat. Our Memorial Day, as new parents, was different, but still good. Next year, we'll commemorate it better. This year, it's just here, and I'm thankful. www.letterstomydaughters.com

For us in Southeast AK it was the first day we could open the house up and air out winter. We might say its when we put away our rain gear, but that never happens. Down in the lower 48 that has become when we leave the house open overnight. Sadly, this is earlier and earlier every year.

Susan, we do the same thing with our guy! He has nice stylish hair all year, until the first heat of May arrives, and then we buzz him bald! It is so much cooler and easier, and for us too, that bald little head means that summer truly has arrived.
