Applebee's serves margarita to toddler
Filed under: Places To Go, Health & Safety: Babies, Nutrition: Health
I never think to check my daughter's sippy cup when we're out at restaurant. If we ask for water, I assume they'll put water in the cup. Maybe, in a worst-case scenario, they'd screw up and give her juice -- a simple mistake, that certainly wouldn't cause her any harm.
However, perhaps I should be more careful, as an Applebee's in Antioch, California accidentally served a toddler margarita in his sippy cup instead of apple juice.
The boy's mother didn't know anything was wrong until a few hours later when her son started getting drowsy, felt sick, and started vomiting. After she rushed him to the hospital, she learned that alcohol was to blame.
This is such an obvious screw-up that it almost has to be on purpose, right? What reason could there possibly be for putting an alcoholic beverage into a cup designed for a preschool-aged child?
Fortunately the boy is doing fine, but someone's sick prank (or incredibly stupid mistake) could've led to far more serious consequences.

libsareevil said...Yes, they spoke English. It was a manager that made the mistake. I know what you're saying though.......half the people in CA don't know how to speak English.

Malia said...I think by "sippy cup" the mother may mean the Applebee's child's cup you are given that has a plastic lid. When you order a child's drink that is what the beverage comes in....I kind of doubt the mother handed over her own cup from home....I may be wrong but having been to Applebee's many times with my kids and getting these cups I can see how it could happen. The staff isn't always the brightest bunch, either.

Howard said...A Dumb Question:
What is a minor (under 18 or 21 depending on state) doing in a BAR (where liquor is served)????
I think that if children are allowed to be at a table (with parents) that there should be no alcoholic drinks served to that table or in that area of the establishment; Liquor should be served in a seperate area / no alcohol drinks allowed at the table with children PERIOD! (or near it - within 25 feet).
Applebee's / a restaurant / does not segerate its BAR from the dining area (it is in public view, just a short railing between the bar area and the dining area) - thus telling todays youths that it is OK to Drink and then Drive.
Drink Responsiblely Now! - And Watch Out for the second hand smoke

libsareevil said...Smoking is not allowed in public bulidings in CA. Also, alcohol is served in many restaurants. It is also sold in Safeway.....Applebee's is not a "bar", it is a restaurant that serves alcohol. Children in CA are not allowed in bars, since you must be 21 to enter a bar. If you are in a restaurant with your kids it is up to your discretion whether or not alcohol is within 25 ft. of your kids, since the table next to you might have a beer on it.

Don said...WAS This just the mix or was it a full fledged Margarita? And was it checked for alcohol or was it just the mother's word? I tend not to trust some-ones word on things like this.[Remember Wendy's chili scare?]

Lin said...No law suit needed, as the restaurant said they were paying for medical bills and it also indicated that the restaurant manager had looked at contents of cup, so "mommy" did not put the alcohol there. This is what the article from the newspaper read...see below:
Antioch police Lt. Pat Welch said the serving appeared to be an accident, according to the newspaper.
Mayorga said she ordered her son's favorite drink for him as the family dined Monday night. When the boy started making faces and pushing the sippy cup away, she became suspicious.
When she opened the cup's lid, Mayorga said, she was instantly hit by the smell of booze.
Corporate representatives for Applebee's told Mayorga that the beverage in the toddler's cup was their "top-shelf" margarita, complete with Triple Sec and high-quality tequila.
Applebee's Vice President Randy Tei said the restaurant keeps apple juice and the premade "top-shelf" liquor fusion in two identical-looking plastic bottles on ice behind the bar, according to the newspaper.
Abblebee's will reimburse the Mayorga family for medical expenses and make changes to the way they store the juice, Tei said.
"The health and well-being of our guests is a priority," Tei said. "We have spoken with the family and have been assured the child is fine."

miss server said...as a server, let me say that it is your responsibility as a parent to bring your kid's juice with you. why should you depend on a stranger to take your child's cup away, out of your view to fill it anyway? when my children were small, i never asked servers to fill their sippy cups. while the child should not have been served alcohol, if the parents had brought what their child needed, this scenario would not have happened.

YES vodka does have taste. It has no distinct flavor, but you can taste the alcohol. Absolut tastes a bit like rubbing alcohol (don't ask how I know).
No matter how good the brand is, if there's enough in it you can taste the alcohol, and you can tell that it is vodka.
