Drunken college students don't need to drive home
Filed under: Day Care & Education
Some of you have children heading off to college this fall (or may be heading off to college yourself). It's a time for learning, exploration, personal growth, and doing wicked keg stands at the Alpha Omega Chi Theta Delta Pi party in the quad. WOO HOO! KEG STANDS!
But just because you may find yourself doing a little drinking this September, it doesn't mean you have to drive home and kill yourself and/or all the other drunken students driving their cars home at approximately the same time. You could always walk, or call a cab (the $5 you'll spend on a cab ride is way less than the repairs on a totaled car, or the court fees you'll pay after your DUI arrest), or use one of the designated driver services your campus operates.
I stumbled across this idea in an article about The Wingmen Driving Service at Four Rumson college in Redbank, New Jersey, and, after a little research, discovered that there's a similar service here in Austin (thanks to the nearly 100,000 students in and around the city). There's almost certainly a DD program at your university, so look them up before your next night out.
And if there isn't one, start your own. I'm sure your college would be delighted to endorse any program that kept their students from dying in alcohol-related accidents. For a "how-to" guide on how to implement a designated driver program in your community, check out this handy site.

jamers said...funny, my school's driving service refuses service to those students who are "visibly intoxicated"
i always wondered how many cars/egos/LIVES would be saved if they let a few hammered frat boys have a ride every once in a while...
