Can you impact your baby's gender before conception?

If you ask most prospective parents whether they're hoping for a boy or a girl, you'll most likely get the standard response: "I just want my baby to be healthy."

And that's true. But dig a little deeper, and usually moms and dads-to-be will admit that they're pulling for a girl over a boy (or vice versa).

However, there isn't anything you can do to influence the gender of the baby before you conceive, right?

This site claims that diet, the "way that you make love with each other," and even the size of the man's penis can influence the gender of your child-to-be. Don't get me wrong, this is almost certainly a money-making con some guy dreamed up to steal money from anxious parents.

But, ridiculous as those claims sound, they made me curious -- so I did a little searching. As it turns out, some far more reputable sources -- such as iVillage -- actually validate the claim, saying that it may very well be possible to influence your baby's gender by timing conception as close to ovulation as possible (also known as the Shettles Method).

While that's interesting, it's also worth noting that there's not any scientific evidence suggesting that the Shettles Method is effective. In fact, some say it decreases your chances of conceiving at all, as adhering to the method requires that you limit intercourse to very specific times every month.

So, anyone tried it? Did it work?
