Gov. Edward G. Rendell of Pennsylvania recently signed a law making it legal for a woman to breastfeed anywhere she has a right to be, public or private. Previously, Pennsylvania was one of only fourteen states that did not protect a woman's right to breastfeed. The law comes after a mall security guard asked a breastfeeding mother to move to the bathroom and a subsequent nurse-in at the mall. While this is certainly good news for those who understand the importance of proper nutrition and the needs of infants, not everyone understands this. One "concerned" citizen wrote to the Post Gazette (the fourth letter down) to voice disapproval: "What about the people who don't want to see this? I, for one, do not want to be walking through a mall only to see mothers breast-feeding their children."
There's a simple answer to that -- don't go to the mall. Or, turn your head and don't stare. There are a lot of things I'm not particularly interested in seeing at the mall, but I'm not going to deprive a baby from getting the nutrition it needs because of it. The writer declares "It was their choice to have children; it's my choice not to care," but it certainly seems they do care. If they really didn't care, they would just go about their business and ignore any breastfeeding mothers.
Instead, they do care and are, for some reason, profoundly offended by even the thought of breastfeeding. To each their own, I guess. Meanwhile, I will happily welcome Pennsylvania into the 21st century.
Thanks to Kim for the tip!

I hardly ever breastfed my child in public, but on the rare occasion I did, I would brace myself for a public confrontation, which never did happen. I had fantasies of having someone come up to me to tell me to stop, and I would squirt them with some breast milk to shut them up. Now THAT would have been something.

Heather said...It is comments like the one mentioned in the Post Gazette that make me feel ashamed to live in such a backward area. (I am a PA resident and a proud breastfeeding mom.) I hope to see a change in attitude by the time my grandchildren are born.
I won't even go into what I find offensive at the local mall.
If I ever saw a mother being hassled, I guarantee I would stand up for her and her child.
