New Baby Einstein DVD: Discovering Shapes
Categories: Babies, Toddlers, Development, Media, Education, That's Entertainment
I've long been a fan of the Baby Einstein videos and do believe they contributed to Jared's early cognitive development. Both Jared and Sara have loved the videos and still watch them. We have, I believe, every one (thank you Costco!). At least, we did until now. The latest title in the series, Discovering Shapes, is available as of today.Billed as "A playful introduction to five basic shapes", the video "introduces circles, ovals, triangles, squares, and rectangles ... within the context of your baby's world." Given that our kids both know their shapes, I think this will be the first Baby Einstein video we haven't bought. I am also not crazy about Disney's habit of forcing you to watch commercials before you can watch the video itself -- it's bad enough on an adult movie, but for a kid's DVD, I think it's just plain wrong.
I'd love to hear from anyone who does get a copy, to see how it compares to the earlier titles. Will you be picking it up? Giving it as a gift? Or are you, like my brother-in-law, vehemently opposed to these sorts of things?

But Baby Newton covers all that, and it's been around for ages!

I just finished a book about consumer culture and how it affects children. There is an entire chapter about baby einstein and how television/videos/dvds are not good for babies' and toddlers' brains. It is called Buy Buy Baby, author Susan Gregory Thomas. My son is 12 months old and he hasn't yet watched any TV or videos. You can put me in the vehemently opposed camp.
