OMG! My mom's on Facebook!
Categories: Just For Moms, Gadgets & Tech
It's extremely rare that I feel like a teenager these days. But it happened this week. I had one of those moments where I was all like, "I totally get it!"
I had a brief Facebook addiction, like many adults do when they first get in contact with old friends and coworkers, when I first signed up. It has since worn off a bit -- mostly due to the realization that some people are better left "un-found." (I mean really, did I need to know that my high school crush moved across the country with his imported Columbian wife? Did it make my day when my psycho ex-boyfriend emailed me a Happy Birthday greeting full of his annoying hasn't-changed-since-high-school spelling mistakes and poor grammar?)
For the most part, it's been a fun distraction, getting notices in my inbox that someone has sent me a message or asked me to be their friend. But the other day I got an email notice that made me drop my jaw in disbelief.
"S.D. added you as a friend on Facebook."
My mother had signed up for Facebook. Oh dear G-d! It's officially over.
It was my sister's fault. She asked me to send a link to a photo album. "Why can't we just email mom the photos?" I suggested. "It'll be fine," my sister countered. But I knew my nosey mom had heard us talking Facebook and would want to know what the fuss was about. At 60, she had taught herself to use the internet, so she could surf my wedding registry and call me every five minutes to tell me another place setting had been bought.
To be honest, it's been a few weeks now and she hasn't really been a problem. But that initial shock of seeing that she joined made me feel 16 again. Hmm... maybe that's not such a bad thing?
What about you? Have you had a similar experience?

Nadine, I'll be 70 on my next birthday and I'm on Facebook (and MySpace although I rarely do anything with it).
I bought a computer in 2004. I'd retired about the time Windows took off so even though I had computer experience, Windows bewildered me. Somehow I managed.
You wouldn't believe the number of grannies and great-grannies like me who have their own blogs.

I was going to say something about being Ann's friend on both facebook and myspace, but she's beat me to it. She's definitely older than most of my friends on there (after all I'm a 22 year old college grad - as of Wednesday!) - but it's kind of cool that it gives her a way to keep in contact with lots of people too!!
