Kids aren't so into the republicans
Filed under: In The News, Media
It is said (not by Winston Churchill, however) that "Any man who is under 30 and is not a Liberal has no heart; and any man who is over 30 and not a Conservative has no brains." It's well known I have no brains, but now it seems the majority of kids have hearts. According to a new survey [Warning: PDF] conducted by the Democracy Corps, young folk are turning their backs on the Republican party.Issues where our youth disagree with the conservative candidates include current topics such as immigration and Iraq as well as social matters such as same-sex marriage and abortion. In 2006, 60% of younger voters supported democrats. Further, while voter turnout has never been stellar amongst young people, it has increased over the last two election cycles, including a nine percent jump in 2004.
Not everyone sees this as good news, of course, but it does give me hope. I know I'm doing best to raise a couple of little liberals, but you never know when you're going to end up with an Alex P. Keaton. Are you actively working to raise your kids with your political viewpoints or are you letting them figure it out on their own?

With our family demographics, I'd be amazed to turn out anything else.

LS said...I'm so tired of this Liberal/Conservative, Democrat/Republican CRAP. Why can't we just raise our kids to be Americans? To look at issues from both sides, incorporate a lot of logic, a little bit of emotion where appropriate and consider what is best for the country, and IGNORE the elephant and the donkey?
This kind of thinking is what has gotten us into this mess in the first place. This nonsense of "I will support this president (BOTH Clinton and Bush) because he's my party's guy, regardless of how badly he has shamed the country and betrayed everything he supposedly stood for" has nearly brought our country to her knees.
If we don't wake up, we're going to be very sorry. Especially if, one day in the future, we can look back and say, "gee, I could have prevented this by opening my eyes and not toeing the party line".

LS said...Oh, and just to be clear... go check out the "nonpartisan" Democracy Corps (http://www.democracycorps.com) - every one of the five founding members is a lifelong Liberal Democrat. Hard to be nonpartisan when there's no representation from any other point of view...

I guess it depends on who is doing the asking.
Of course, the liberal agenda of the schools may have a little something to do with it as well.

My poor daughter (age 6) is confused because I'm a Libertarian. So I have to explain a lot of things to her in more detail. Not just "Liberals/Democrats" or "Conservatives/Republicans" are bad. I don't like either of the 2 major parties and think they both get a lot of things wrong. Right now, my daughter says she is a Libertarian, too, but of course I want her to make up her own mind about things. Unfortunately, my candidates never win, and that is hard for a kid to understand. :)

It's not as trite as ROCK the VOTE, it has (much liek AARP) been able to mobilize thousands of young voters to make positive changes in most higher education, but now also on absentee ballot voting. The VA21 folks are the first in the nation and in VA to do what they do, and they do it well, and are respected in the Virginia State Capital of RIchmond (where I am affiliated) I see them doing there lobbying and activists duties and hope that my kids get as in to as they are one day.
While I imagine that if you are into higher education funding then you have to be a little to the left, and most students are... but our state is also a republican run house and senate,.... so the fact they these kids are getting anything done for their age group is quite amazing.

I guess we live in a liberal society where child sex offenders run free, illegals can get away with any crimes they want, kids are told to go have sex and do drugs as much as they'd like, homosexuals are called "normal" and "natural", people want to live in "peace and harmony" with the very terrorists that want to kill us...
Don't people see that this is the liberal agenda? I just don't understand sometimes...

Damn liberals!

"Yes, it's terrible that we live in a society where people are innocent until proven guilty"
Innocent until proven guilty??? I can name lots of people for whom that didn't work...there's a couple of Border Patrol agents sitting in jail right now for something they didn't do, O.J. Simpson walks free, Jack McClellan, profiled on another PD post, is out there lusting after your little girls RIGHT NOW, and illegals can live right next door to you and use services that you pay for. And thanks to the ACLU, towns can do NOTHING about it.
"where people living in an impoverished country seek to make a better life for themselves and their families"
How? By instituting socialized healthcare and demanding subsidized housing, food, and education? By coming here and demanding rights that they shouldn't have because they refuse to become a citizen?
"where people believe that educating children about the dangers of unsafe sexual behavior and drug use actually prevents said behavior"
There's a difference between *educating* children about those dangers and *encouraging* the act. I have nothing against educating kids, at appropriate ages, about drug use and sex. What I (and others) have a problem with is dumping tons of money into a program that doesn't work (D.A.R.E.) and handing out condoms to kids starting in 6th grade, and sometimes earlier.
Liberalism isn't as idealistic as you'd like us to believe. And frankly, Conservatism isn't as pius as it would like to believe. That's why I stand by my original response and continue to say... DROP THE LABELS, people! Start using your BRAINS instead of being a toady for a party. THINK about the issues instead of FEELING them. Once we start using the brains that God gave us, maybe we can stop the stupid fighting and turn ourselves around. Because if we don't, that wall is gonna hurt when we hit it. And this country that we all profess to love so much is going to be gone.
