Daily Blog: Five Moms
Categories: Teens & tweens, Safety, Alcohol & Drugs, Education
I feel confident that I could tell if my sons were drinking alcohol or smoking pot. I know about huffing. I realize that ephedrine, an ingredient in allergy and cold medicines, is one of the main ingredients necessary to make meth. I've heard about "the choking game". But if I found an empty cough medicine bottle in my son's trash, I'd assume he wasn't feeling well and just hadn't mentioned it.
Until I read the FiveMoms.com website, I had no idea that over two million teenagers a year have used cough medicine as a way to get high.
Getting the word about cough medicine abuse out to other parents is the entire purpose behind FiveMoms.com The premise is simple: one mom (or dad) educating themselves and then sharing this information with five other parents, is the key in preventing and stopping this dangerous practice. Christy Crandell, one of the five moms involved with the website, understands the importance of this information. When her son was eighteen years old, he was arrested for armed robbery while high on over-the-counter cough medicine. He's currently serving a thirteen year prison sentence.
Not only have FiveMoms made getting educated on "syrupheads" quick and easy, sharing the information with others requires just a few keystrokes and mouse click. As an added incentive, they are offering a free manicure set just for spreading the word.
Five moms and one website have the power to change a lot of lives.
