What's ironic to me is that she is from a class of "haves". The have nots are always potrayed as uneducated, lowly serfs whom do nothing but waste time. This "have" obviously has the looks to take her places, like the big university she is slated to go to, but what scares me is that folks like her, like the Duke LaCrosse team and people like Michael VIck are considered great because they throw balls far or look great in a dress. Our society is led by these people who are usually in a position to make important decisions. I will NEVER let my son be taught in any school in SC or that this girl has gone to at the least. What a waste...

On the Today Show, she said she was overwhelmed, everything came at her at once, and she only heard two words of the question. But when you watch the video she looks so focused and composed and still continues to talk knowing she doesn't have a clue. She might want to consider a career in politics.

To Kristina: At the age of 18 this girl should not be "just learning" about Geography. The teachers in our education system can only do so much, it's up to the students to pay attention and learn everything they are being taught. It is nobody's fault but that person if they turn out to be idiots. The 1/5 of Americans that cannot locate the U.S. on a map are just that: idiots.

This was written in her defense by a former school mate:

"Okay so I go to this girls old High school. All yall people who are calling her idiots and stupid are idiots. How are you supposed to answer a question like that. Not to mention she was the first person to answer this question. If you really think about it all of yall prolbaly can't. Also, all the other girls got way easier questions and she is only 18 years old so who are yall to call her stupid she is just learning and she has never even been on tv. It was nerves that messed her up on that question not stupidity."

Is there one single reason to go beyond this.

Curious that everyone is blaming either the girl or the State of South Carolina. Should we not be asking ourselves why the question is relevant? Why can't kids all over America, belonging both to the "haves" and "have nots" find their own country on a map? Could you find Iraq from the space shuttle?

Only snot nosed conseeded people would enter these shows to begin anyway.Everyone there is haughty and think there better then the next one.So everytime one of them messes up,its our right to laugh and make fun!There not so wonderful and perfect rolemodels now are they!Nerves?! Who cares, "if you cant take the heat get out of the kitchen"!If she didnt want to be laughed at and judged she shouldnt have joined a show that waits for you to mess up with judges on it!

When I was ten, I pretty much knew more of the geography of the world than this woman would if she lived to be a hundred.

At sixteen, I remember us having to solve problems from I.E. Irodov for my high-school exams because I happen to be from "some Asian country".

At eighteen, this woman is legally an adult and should be capable of something more than blabbering utter rubbish. Only eighteen years old? When a preschool kid can recite the US state capitals and when three year olds can solve Rubik's cubes? Her problem, good lady, is that she is stupid - plain and simple.

It's about time we stopped making excuses and started doing something about idiocy before it blindsides us.

And this is why I have to send my child to a private school in South Carolina. The public school system here is one of the worst.

OMG-Missy...I was going to say, this is why I homeschooled mine in SC. The SAT scores at the highest rated high schools are still some of the worse in the country.

It's not just SC though. I am seeing college students that "made" A's in high school unable to pass basic freshmen English placement tests.

The education system in the US is in dire need of help.

I'm from Ireland (can you point it on a map??? ;) and i think the problem with American education is that Geography isn't a seperate subject like it is here. I remember years ago, i was about 8 and I had an American penpal. One day she wrote to me and asked me where in the United States Ireland was! I think we had such a laugh at home I never wrote back! If you can't pinpoint where your own country is, what hope is there for you?

Sheer comedy, this girl is an idiot, I am 6 years younger than her, and I, or almost any person my age(and some younger people.) that I know, could easily answer this question, it just goes to show how crappy education is in some areas.
