Nine-year-old saves the day

Shyra Torres plans to be a hero when she grows up -- she's going to be a teacher. Already, however, the nine-year-old is a hero of another sort. She awoke early Saturday morning to the sound of a crackling fire in her New Jersey home, but not the warm comforting kind you find in a fireplace -- instead, this was the life-taking, home-destroying type that eats people and houses. She woke her sister Natasha and together they got everyone -- thirty-four people in all, living in three row houses -- up and out of the house. She woke her mother who, at first, didn't believe her. "She thought I was joking, but I wasn't," said Shyra Torres. "I ran and said 'Tasha, Tasha, wake up' and we all got out of the house."
Her sister gives her all the credit: "If it wasn't for her, we wouldn't be here right now," said Natasha Torres. "When I first woke up, I thought it was a dream." Shyra's family wore t-shirts with "Hero of Paterson Avenue" written on them over a picture of Shyra for a family gathering Sunday evening. The whole family got together at an aunt's house directly across the street from where the fire took place.
"She caught it before the smoke alarms went off," said Shyra's grandfather William Redner. "After she woke us up they started going." It sounds like this is one lucky family rightfully proud of one amazing young hero.
