Is Nicole Richie Putting Her Baby in Danger?
I'm not sure anyone (other than Paris Hilton) expected Nicole Richie to do a decent job looking after her unborn child. After all, she wasn't exactly capable of looking after herself before the pregnancy. Plus, even though you'd like to think that motherhood would ground even the loopiest people, we've all watched Britney prove that, for celebrities, the opposite appears to be true. So I suppose it's no surprise that some recent photos seem to indicate that Nicole may be putting her baby in danger.
That's Richie in Hawaii, hanging out in a hot tub on vacation. Seems normal enough, but apparently hot tubs, Jacuzzis and whirlpools are off-limits from pregnant women, because they cause abnormally high body temperatures which could lead to birth defects. I'm a parent, and didn't know that, so I suppose it's possible that the reality TV star simply wasn't aware that she could be doing harm to her unborn child. However, there's a warning for pregnant woman in bold letters on the sign right next to the pool.
So what's the problem: that she doesn't care, or can't read?

Tiff said...Give her a break like the 1st comment states maybe it was turned down to a normal lower temp. I've done a jacuzzi on a warm temp while pregnant and my babies were all perfectly normal and healthy. People are so quick to criticise. Tell me you never drank caffine while pregnant either or gotten a manicure or pedicure done at a nail salon cause all that stuff is suppose to be off limits to...

C'mon Jonathon find someone else to pick on! said...I agree with Tiffany (poster 14). I do believe in doing all you an for healthy pregnancy but doctors these days carry it too far. I have 8 children and was never under all the rules my daughter, who is in her 4th month, is now. Years ago, we didn't know better and I even smoked during my earlier pregnancies. Those two are both in the Military and my daughter is a member of Mansa, her IQ is so high so I guess even smoking since I had no clue didn't harm either of them. In any case, look at the pic - Nicole's belly isn't even in the water. I took hot baths a lot to help my back, rode my bikem played tennis, I did plenty of things and all 8 of my children are happy, healthy, the five adults have great careers and are in college. These days the OB docs want you doing next to nothing. I'm stunned to hear the directions my daughter gets but I tell her what I did and she keeps a good balance of exercise, good eating AND she goes occasionally into the jacussi at a spa we treat ourselves to couple times a year. Just keeps her belly out of the water (like Nicole IS here) and if she gets warm, gets out. OB docs need to get with TODAY and you people need to stop slamming on Nicole who so obviously does not even have her belly in the water. C'mon, some celeb somewhere must be doing something that is REALLY stupid! Nicole is not doing a thing wrong here. Leave the girl alone for Pete's sake!

She isn't harming her unborn baby at all, her belly is out of the water. Good Lord you people need to find other people to pick on and let her live her life, no one is perfect!

McArthur said...Well First off if you read the article and saw a link in it for effects of hotubs and then read that. it says the plus side of a nice warm bath is most of your upper body is out of the water and doesn't harm the baby. Now let's take a look at this picture. I'd say from her waist up her entire body is out of the water. Now you geniouses get a life and crawl back under your redneck rock. Yes she's had a past and haven't you seen how far she comes? That's part of recovery... slip ups. Don't be so judgemental. Now go smoke your cigarettes or drink your booze, over eat or under eat. You all or just as equally guilty of having some kind of problem. No one is perfect. Hypocrites

Gwen said...You know, part of me thinks a lot of Britney Spear's issues stem from all the scrutiny all the time with her life and kids. EVERYONE makes bad decisions in regards to their kids at one point or another in their lives. No one is the perfect parent, and I challenge anyone who says they never made a single mistake with their kids ever, no matter how minor. And those mistakes are amplified ten times when you're a celebrity.
There are so many things people aren't suppose to do during pregnancy that you wouldn't even think of unless your doctor tells you. And lets face it, sometimes they are just too busy during your appointment and neglect to give you the info. Most of the stuff I found out, I found out from books or online, I didn't even hear it from my doctor. Like for example, I didn't know that if you eat steak or hamburgers that it has to be well done. I wouldn't have even thought of it if the waiter hadn't noticed I was pregnant and advised me to go well done on my steak instead of the medium-well I asked for. Or even dried fruit. Not suppose to have that either because it's processed with sulpher dioxide to preserve it. Or changing cat litter boxes...the list is endless. If it's bad to be in a hot tub when you're preggo, I'm sure Nicole either got the okay from her doc (it doesn't say in the article how long she was in there, it might have only been in small intervals), or she really didn't know. Cut her some slack. I would be more concerned if her doc told her not to do it again, and she did anyway. That's the only time I think people should get down on people for their actions. We are human afterall and all make honest mistakes.

LRCNursing said...Maybe she didn't see the sign or it is also okay if you stay in an hot tub just not for extended periods of times. If you get in an hot tub while pregnant you should also keep the top half of your body out of the water which she is doing. Some people are too critcal and judge the celebrities too fast. She did make some mistakes but all people do.

Heather M said...I have seen a lot of posts where people are referring to increasing the mother's body temperature. What about all these health nuts that go and do aerobic exercise while they are pregnant? THAT increases body temperature as well. Just do whatever you want to and deal with it. Stop worrying about what everyone else does-sweep off your own front porch before you try to sweep off your neighbor's! There is no such thing as the perfect parent as parents we have all made mistakes whether we knew it at the time or not.

By being in the water any part of your body causes your body heat to raise, the higher your body heat is the more your child is in danger. It causes the baby's temp to go up and causes brain damage just like if your child had a high fever outside the womb. And it's not the first trimester it's the whole pregnancy.

angie said...She looks so much healthier, so I would imagine she either has the heat turned down or she's keeping her belly out of it, like it looks like in the photo. Her DUI charges were before she was pregnant. And I think doctors are so afraid of frivolous lawsuits that they'll say you can't do anything ever in order to have a healthy baby. I am not pregnant, but if I was, I'd be in the whirlpool to help my back (it goes out all the time) and just for relaxation. This article is just mean, and I think she'll do her best *unlike Britney* to have a nice, healthy, happy baby.

april said...Ok, I had to address this. It is body temperature that can negatively effect the fetus, keeping your belly out of the water means that it takes longer for your body temperature to increase (less contact between your skin and the water, duh) so it does make a difference! Also, you have more of your body outside cooling off by contact with the air.
My doctor said that hot tubs were ok for short periods (5-10 min) as long as I didn't start to feel too warm. He also recommended keeping at least my shoulders and chest out of the water, to slow down the body temp rise. Keeping your belly out is just a step above that.
Stop hatin' y'all
