What has the world come to when 10-year-olds are pulling knives on 6-year-olds? That's what police in Garden City, Kansas say happened last week in front of Victor Ornelas Elementary School.

Picture this: A six-year-old girl waiting for her mother in front of the school, holding a box of candy her teacher has given her for good behavior. A ten-year-old boy sidles up, eying the candy. He then demands the girl hand over the goods. When she refuses, he pulls out a knife and threatens her with it. The plucky little six-year-old declines to part with her treat and eventually the boy walks away.

Can you imagine picking up your child and hearing that story? Of course, mom called the police, who went to the boy's home and found the knife. He was arrested, taken to Programs Assessment Treatment Habilitation, and later released to his parents.

A spokesman for the school district says the boy was "disciplined according to school policy", but wouldn't say exactly what that means. Cpt. Mike Utz, of the Garden City Police Dept., tells a local television station, "It's happened in the past as far as threats but for an attempted robbery, it's very unusual and it's very unfortunate."

Unusual and unfortunate is an understatement. And this kind of behavior in a young child does not bode well for his future. Where do you suppose a little kid learns to act this way?
