Personalized video greetings from Santa
Filed under: Big Kids, Activities: Babies, Media
Last year, Ellie discovered some hidden Christmas gifts in my closet several weeks before the big day. These were gifts intended to be from Santa and because she didn't tell me she had found them, I went ahead and presented them as such. This, of course, raised doubts in her mind as to whether the jolly fat guy was real or not.
Of course, Santa has been on her mind lately and she wants confirmation of his existence. I cringe every time she asks me because while I don't want to lie to her, I also don't want to give her the answer she so clearly doesn't want to hear. Instead, I've been giving her some line about believing in Santa makes him real. I don't think she's buying it.
I may be pushing it playing Santa this year, but if you have younger ones, this personalized video greeting from Santa would likely thrill them to no end. From Make Believer, it's a simple online program that allows you to enter personal information about your child, which, through the magic of technology, is converted to a speech that Santa himself recites in a video for your child. He calls them by name, knows where they live and whether they have been naughty or nice. He mentions their specific good behavior and even knows what they want for Christmas! Adults might find the video a bit obvious, especially when he raises his list to cover his mouth when speaking the personalized parts, but I don't think a little kid would notice.
The best thing about the program is that a portion of the profits go to the Children's Cancer Association to support children and teens with serious illnesses. The greetings start at $5.39 each and can be downloaded and kept forever. I am going to do one for Ellie - maybe it will stop the questions for a while.

The graphics aren't clear enough/busy enough to keep my 3 and 5 year olds sitting in front of a 3 inch PC video of Santa. Santa's pretty small. I did look but didn't see media mail as an option which would maybe allow for video enlargement on a DVD player and allow for my 5 year old to have something from Santa to hold onto.
