Instead of spending her free time in December making lists of what she'd like to find under the tree, ten-year-old Laura has a different plan for the days leading up to Christmas.
Laura's beloved grandfather, who told her she was a leader and made her feel big even though she was still young, died of brain cancer. Rather than dwell on her sadness, Laura decided to do something that would make her grandfather happy, the first twenty-five days of December she'd live her life like her grandfather lived his-by making a difference and helping others.
On December 1st, Laura stealthily shoved her neighbor's driveway and sidewalk and put down salt without them knowing. One the 2nd, she recycled bottles and donated the money ($13.20) to a charity trying to find a cure for Duchenne's Muscular Syndrome.
Inspired to make a difference in your area but not sure where to start? Laura has a list of thirty different ideas for kids that can be easily modified for adults. She includes tips like: donate old books to a library, write a letter to someone telling how much you appreciate them, do the dishes, start a fundraiser, pick up litter, and be a good role model.
Most grandparents are proud of their grandchildren, but Laura's grandfather was right on the money with his assessment of his little Laura. While Laura's current plans are to be a veterinarian, it won't be surprising to hear she grows up and does great work for people with those leadership skills her grandfather noted.
Keep up the good work, Laura!
