Lip-balm, my new best friend!
Filed under: Just For Moms, Health & Safety: Babies, That's Entertainment
Several months ago, I read this post by ParentDisher Sandy Maple about the dangers of lip-balm addiction, and I remember thinking, "Boy, I'm glad I don't have that problem!"
Which are, of course, those famous last words. Six months later and I have 3 tubes of lip-balm stashed in various places: my purse, my car, in the bathroom. It's not just any lip-balm, it's Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer, and it has vitamin E! And sunflower oil! And a lot of other stuff I can't pronounce!
So, in all truthfulness, my lips now seem drier than ever. I can't decide if my lips are over-moisturized, as the article in Sandy's post suggests, or if it's just a particularly dry winter. Do you have any experience with lip-balm, or lip-balm addiction, that you'd be willing to share?

Gia said...I used to have that problem. I now use vitamin E. You can get it in a bottle in oil form or you can get it in stick form. I get mine from walmart for 96 cents, in the vitamins and supplement isle. I did use the oil at one time but it gets a bit messy.
There is a definate difference from chapsticks. And burts bees is supposed to be natural ingredients but it gave me the same feel as other chapsticks.
Im telling you though if you use the pure vitamin E you will feel the difference and never go back

Joy said...Hello, my name is Joy and I'm a lip balm addict!! I am, have been for years. I buy mine from the UK. It's cherry lypsl and I buy 24 at a time. I have one in almost every room and my purse, robe pocket.....get the idea?? I don't use it much during the day but more so at night. It is very dry here in MN but I think I need it because I've just done it for so long, it's my routine.
I feel I'm not really hurting anything or anyone. I love the smell, feel, taste of it. I'm not planning on cold turkying it anytime soon.

christieana said...I some times have a huge addiction to some lip products, I found that most of them contain alcohol. If not directly alcohol then some other chemical form of it. The objection being that it dries out your lips so you need to apply more then, you run out faster. The only lip product I found not to do that was Chanel lip gloss but its $25 dollars a stick though it does last forever and ever, or just regular lotion.

Amanda said...the more chapstick I use, the drier my lips seem to be. I'm not sure but I think its psychosomatic. After a few days of not using chapstick I seem to be over it?! I try to only use it at night after I wash my face and brush my teeth and stuff.

Jan Bay said...I made a lot of homemade soap and candles as gifts and found that soap and lip balm have many ingredients in common. I bought some tins and made my own. The only drawback is that people that I gave them to want refills...often!

Joy said...Jan, where did you find the "recipe" for it? I'd really like to try that.

Jan Bay said...I played with the chocolate lip balm recipe that is one recipezaar. They said to add 1/4 tsp. almond extract, but I prefer to add sweet almond oil or olive oil.
The additional oil keeps the lip gloss from being too hard. I get my lip balm containers at sweetcakes because I like their fragrances. You might be able to find some cheaper somewhere else, but I didn't have time to comparison shop when I needed them.
I know this thread is about lip balm, but I wanted to mention that one of the best things that I have learned to make myself is non-petroleum jelly from beeswax and sweet almond oil.
