So we've all learned that we don't go around the neighborhood selling cookies without an adult, right girls? In fact, let's all just set up a table outside the local grocery store and sell cookies with mom right there. That'll be perfectly safe, right? Actually, it turns out it isn't, really. At least not in Florida.Nine-year-old Gracie Smith was doing just that -- selling cookies outside a Winn-Dixie supermarket in Southeastern Florida -- when a teenage girl came up and began talking to her. Moments later, the teen reached over and grabbed an envelope with more than $150 of cookie money. She then ran off, jumped into a car with another teen, and took off.
The two miscreants apparently did it for the money. "We went through all that effort to get it, we got all these charges and we had to give the money back. I'm kind of pissed," said one. The other one said she wasn't sorry, just angry that they got caught. Luckily, however, they did get caught and will hopefully face some stiff punishment.

Okay, that wasn't funny. I sure hope those teens have to do some counseling. they are obviously just beginning their careers.

Laura said...These teens show no remorse and no understanding of right vs wrong. They need to be punished in a way they'll understand, because obviously conscience isn't an issue for them. What arrogance!!!

Society has let it happen said...It took this to ask that? While it is definitely on the list, it's not at the top of my list of items that have me asking that question. Equally horrible, but no where near the devastation and possible outcomes of the things towards the top of it. I'm not surprised that it has occurred, and others shouldn't be either. It is the way of the world -the one we have allowed to be created. It will be this way until responsibility is accepted, and blame ceases. Only then, will positive changes come.

JUDY said...Guess the money was where they coulld get it? What is a 9 yr old doing selling cookies without an adult? This would not have happened if an adult was there to oversee this child.
I don't think kids shoulod be going door to door by themselves either.
There should have been an adult there to protect this child.

Kerstin said...If you read the link, it says that she:
Smith told WPBF that she turned to her mother in tears, saying, "Mommy! That girl took all my money!"
She wasn't alone, the mom was probably not concerned since the teenager was asking about the cookies and perhaps didn't look threatening. It also says at the beginning of this article (in context clues) that she wasn't alone.
