Woman buckles up beer but not kid

You know that one time you thought you buckled your child in their car seat only to realize in horror later you hadn't actually latched the belt, you were on autopilot and somehow forgot that step and you still feel horrible about it? Well, you're fine.
A woman in Florida was arrested after police stopped her for running a red light and discovered that while the case of beer in the passenger side of the car was safely belted in, the sixteen month old girl in the back seat was not.
After finding a couple of metal pipes commonly used for smoking drugs in the driver's purse, she was arrested and charged with driving under the influence, child abuse, possession of drug paraphernalia and driving without a license.
What I don't understand is why the girl's mother, who was sitting in the back seat with the toddler while her drunk/high friend drove, wasn't charged with anything. Anyone have an idea?

Emi said...Hey Judi, and anyone else in this situation where there is child abuse/endangerment...In the future, you can still call the authorities if you have the license plate number. You probably would call Children's services instead, but they can track the registered owner through DMV and investigate the matter that way.
Try to remember as many details as you can such as time, location (nearest cross streets, direction they were travelling) and description of the persons involved. You'll probably have to pull over after you get the license plate to jot all this down. But I've done this in the past.

Becky said...hey wild bill, you might be right, I might be crazy. I just had a head-on collision with a drunk driver in my Cavalier. It folded up all right. It folded exactly where the government told the auto makers it had to for my safety. If you saw the car, you'd probably swear you saw dead people. But thanks to my local government run fire and rescue house, my government-trained paramedics, our government funded shock trauma helicopters and trauma centers and medical teams, I am able to write you with my government sponsored rights to speech only 11 days after the accident. A lot of crash dummies gave their all by direct order of my federal government so I could write and tell you that you are a paranoid idiot. Your trip into the "days of when" are quaint but misguided.

LNeunz said...Does no one realize that the reason she buckled the beer in was not to "protect" it, but to keep the seat belt chime from ringing. The beer was in the front passenter seat. That said, both "adults" in the car endangered the child and should be held accountable.

Kayla said...That is so crazy everyone fighting over this subject. I'm 20 years old and from the south, Arkansas to be exact, and I still buckle up my child and will continue to do so until I can't find a carseat big enough for her and I NEVER EVER would consider drinking and driving with her or having someone that had even had a drink drive with her in the car.
