Rescued pup rescues family right back

With the exception of our fancy French dog, all of our pets were either adopted from a shelter or found wandering homeless. Abandoned and abused animals need love too and often repay their rescuers with unconditional and unwavering loyalty. Clearly, this was the case with Bella, a 3-year-old golden retriever/collie mix who was rescued as an abused puppy by the Feuling family.
Sue Fueling and her 9-year-old daughter McKenzie were sleeping early Friday morning when they were awakened by Bella's barking and jumping on the bed. Smelling smoke, Sue grabbed her daughter and ran out of the house. When she tried to coax Bella and her other dog, a 6-month-old golden retriever named Maddie, out of the house, they refused to leave. "Bella must have thought McKenzie was still in the house," Feuling said.
The Feulings were taken to the hospital and monitored for smoke inhalation, but sadly the dogs didn't survive. The fire gutted their home and destroyed all of their possessions, but it is Bella and Maddie that Sue Feuling is mourning. "Everything I lost is nothing compared to them," she said.

Cindy said...To all of you who say the owners were terrible for not running back in to get the dogs - a little 8 year old boy on Staten Island ran back into his burning house to get his pets and was killed (along with the pets). Although I too would be horrified to lose my pet in a fire, it would be worse to lose a child. I have 5 cats plus one foster cat and if our apt. was on fire, I'd be hard pressed to run back into a burning apt. or send my husband back in and lose them all. It was a tough choice but the mom did right by her child.

Leilani said...My dog obsesses over fire. Whenever I light one in the wood stove she will sit there the whole time it is lit staring at it. If the fire is making noises like hissing or popping she will try to inch closer and make concerned whines at it.I wonder if alot of dogs are just like that with fire...thinking they can bite it or fight it...

It is horrible that they died, and I work at a vet office, so I know how hard it is to lose a loved pet. However you can't fault the women for thinking of her child's safety first, if she had gone back in and the roof collapsed then this girl would have lost her mother as well as her pets. I love animals and hate to hear about their deaths but people need to get their priorities straight, you can't worry about every animal you might have and still keep everyone safe. This women has enough to be upset about right now, don't make it worse by saying she's a terrible person for not being able to save the dogs.

My house burned in the recent fires of San Diego and let me tell you that there is no possible way any of you would have been able to return for the animals or anything else once a house is burning. When fires are blazing, it is like a storm- you cannot tell which way is which or what is going to happen. Additionally, they move abley to engulf you in seconds- so all your fire "plans" go right out the window. It's life or death-obviously the human family's placed first.

He said, for some reason, an animal's instinct (whether it be a dog, cat, or horse) is to stay in a confined area because they feel "safe". Even if the confined area is burning, they are more afraid to come out into an open area when there is danger. My black lab will go under the table when she is afraid of something. Anyway, my firefighter friend said he has responded to many fires where they were able to coax or carry the animals out and the animals will run right back into the burning building!
So, we can't be too critical of this poor woman.

Carly said...Why didn't the firefighters go into the house to get the dogs? You people saying "You need to be in her shoes!" are idiots! No matter how bad the situation is you should SAVE your FAMILY! I include my pets as family. At least the firefighters in Joey's story actually TRIED to save the cat. I'm proud of Sue Fueling for taking in the dog but what is the use if the dog were to die.To me the dog would have been better off at the pound(or where ever).
The dogs were trying to save the daughter. They risked their lives to save a family member. Why couldn't the owner do the same.

The dogs stayed in the house for reasons no one will ever know, and it is truly sad that they perished in the fire. Everyone responds to stressful situations differently, so to judge the lady is unfair. CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS WORK!!!! It only takes a minute, but could help save EVERY member of your family

Lauren Caruso said...Hey Bobbie.....RELAX!! More people than not, feel their pets are truly a family member, not saying a pets life is more valuable than a child's life. Regardless of the implications, many people FEEL this way. Including myself. I have 6 dogs and I would do everything in my power to get them out of a burning house. And we have an evacuation plan that includes our dogs, so they would probably survive a fire or any other catastrophy. You feel there is no comparison between a couple of dogs and a child, and that's fine.....that's your right. Feelings aren't right nor are they wrong. It isn't a fact, it's someone's feelings, and they need to be validated. It's like if your husband/boyfriend was insanely jealous of a man you are totally just friends with. You feel nothing but friendship for this man, and your husband is on a completely different page. That's HIS feelings about it, even though you feel it is ridiculous. As Thomas Jefferson said, "An opinion is a person's valuable validation of their perspective." It's part of what makes us one of a kind. So, try not to get so worked up about how someone feels, or their opinion. Of course it is a miracle those pups saved their humans. It is VERY SAD the pups didn't make it though. I don't think anyone was saying mom should have left her daughter and saved the puppies. It is just sad they didn't have the time to get them out. That's all. Some of the comments made were pretty much to get a rise out of someone. I mean to say "too bad the mom got out" is just plain ignorant. If that's how Marie feels, it is her right.....but that's pretty f***ed up......in my eyes.
Things have changed so much in our society over the years, and I hope our nation can get past the school shootings, spousal abuse, child abuse/molestation/rape, animal cruelty/abuse, and an epidemic of crass, pompass, crabby, greedy, judgmental, addicted and intolerable people. I guess it must come from the high stress levels and fast paced lives most Americans seem to get caught up in. I think I'd better stop here.....I'm going to be talking politics in a minute. One last thing.....we could all learn a thing or 2 from our pets. My 6 dogs are all different breeds and temperaments, and they get along famously.......Peace to all.
