Teens who eat breakfast keep the weight off

Filed under: Teens, Nutrition: Health, In The News

Many people think that skipping breakfast is an ideal way to stay lean. After all, you avoid all those extra calories, right? And for many, skipping breakfast actually seems to make them feel less hungry. But research has shown time and time again that breakfast eaters are actually leaner. Eating breakfast lets your body know that it's time to start burning calories again after a long night's rest, and it may help people from overeating later in the day.

Teens may be particularly prone to skipping breakfast, since high school starts early these days, and teens are notorious night owls. But a five year study of just over 2,000 teens found that teens who ate breakfast regularly had a lower body mass index than those who did not. Not only that, breakfast eating teens tended to be more active and had less fat and cholesterol in their diet.

These studies always make me wonder -- which came first? Are these teens leaner because they eat breakfast? Or do they eat breakfast because they have been taught healthy habits? Either way, a nutritious breakfast for every member of the family seems like a good idea.
