Shoplifter forgets son!
Categories: Teens & tweens, Just For Dads, Places To Go, Health & Safety, Weird But True

Gee, how embarrassing. You go in for one thing, leave without another, and it turns out to be your child. Oh, and you were too busy shoplifting to remember to get him on the way out!
A shoplifter in Amsterdam five-fingering a pack of meat accidentally left his twelve-year-old son in the supermarket he stole from. The thief was, naturally, traced because of his son. When contacted by authorities he refused to claim his son and asked that they call the child's mother instead.
Eventually, the shoplifter did turn himself in. Not only was he setting a bad example for his child, but my guess is that in addition to shoplifting charges he could face abandonment, endangering a child and a bunch of other things too.
Stupid, stupid, stupid...yet, true, true, true. Thankfully the son wasn't charged as an accomplice or anything.

If the kid is twelve I'm not sure you could really claim he was endangered... still, pretty stupid.

Tell the parents of 12-year-olds who have been abducted and murdered that the kids were not "endangered" because they were 12.

Yeah that's a reasonable argument... adults get kidnapped and murdered too... all the time. That doesn't mean they're "endangered" whenever they're alone. I'm not saying a twelve year old can fend for himself in general but leaving him alone at a public place is not endangerment any more than it is when parents drop their preteens off at the mall. I don't know about Amsterdam but in America that's not illegal. It's part of learning independence and how to be an adult... which is what a twelve-year-old should be starting to learn. The problem with this story wasn't that the kid was left alone at a grocery store, it's that a parent was committing a crime in the presence of his child. Though the fact that he actually forgot his son indicates all sorts of other issues.

I don't know, as I wasn't there, but if the man was stealing food as opposed to an iPod or something, then perhaps he has just reached his limit ... it seems to me that he is pretty new at the whole thing, otherwise he would not have left his child behind. I'm not making excuses (for ANYBODY), but I bet there is more to this story than what was reported.

Of course it can be abandonment, but thankfully the boy was 12 and knew how to get help. What a dispicable thing to do to your own son.

....str8 people have done a wonderful job of screwing up marriage and raising children. So much for the sanctity of marriage and having children.

blame your ownstr8t parents for your own sexual depravity ...while I dont condone what this fella did...mybe he truly was trying to feed his family? Afterall he stole meat....not cigarettes or the like.

Who said he was straight? Because he was married? Ha! You know how many people that are gay get married to appear straight or have kids? Even the politicians in the news the past few years have done that. You don't know that he's straight!
escout12 3-21-2008 @ 4:23PM
shut up teahan. staight people don't screw up marriages and parenting, stupid people do. heck, criminals do. and that kid is very smart to go get help. not only was he found and safe, he exposed what a dumb, irresponsible criminal/person his father is. just because he's straight doesn't mean he will screw up his marriage/life. gay people are married too. those are called "closet cases." so SHUT UP, TEAHAN.

Wow. Denied his son. That will come back to bite him in the butt in a few years when his son is older. Karma will get him eventually.

This twelve year old child is a victim. It's possible that the son didn't have any idea that his dad was even going to steal anything. Who knows for sure ?

Andy, are you kidding me? This is not a typical parent. I am a straight parent and I am not screwing up my kids...I would NEVER do something so inconceivable!

WOW! This is like a game of "telephone" The story is way off track. First, The reply to "str8" was referring to him, not his sex gender, also, There is a diff btween droppin ur kid off for a stroll at the mall or abandoning him at the store, as he prob had no clue what the He-- was going on! Last of all, for the person that said, " I would never..." NEVER say Never!

Although this idiot is obviously NOT a whiz at parenting, using his stupidity to take a potshot at all str8 parents is unfair! Not all str8 parents are as stupid as this guy! And all str8 people should not be blamed for the state of marriage and parenthood today! I'm one of those str8 people who believe that marriage and parenthood should NOT be limited to str8 people. So, Andy, before you make a blanket judgement call, consider that you may be including people who are on your side.

am i the only person that is wondering where the hell that str8 (really? its straight, or more precisely, heterosexual) argument came from? im surprised so many people are even responding seriously to such a ridiculously irrelevant statement....
