Shoplifter forgets son!
Filed under: Teens, Just For Dads, Places To Go, Health & Safety: Babies, Weird But True

Gee, how embarrassing. You go in for one thing, leave without another, and it turns out to be your child. Oh, and you were too busy shoplifting to remember to get him on the way out!
A shoplifter in Amsterdam five-fingering a pack of meat accidentally left his twelve-year-old son in the supermarket he stole from. The thief was, naturally, traced because of his son. When contacted by authorities he refused to claim his son and asked that they call the child's mother instead.
Eventually, the shoplifter did turn himself in. Not only was he setting a bad example for his child, but my guess is that in addition to shoplifting charges he could face abandonment, endangering a child and a bunch of other things too.
Stupid, stupid, stupid...yet, true, true, true. Thankfully the son wasn't charged as an accomplice or anything.

DD said...shell said...Did any one stop to think they were poor and hungry? He stole meat. May be he was trying to feed his son
===========================
Shell...............wake up. If the father was trying to feed his son, would he have noticed anything was wrong when he sat down to dinner and there was no child there to feed?
Also, all of the bleeding hearts who agree that maybe he was just "trying to feed his family", consider the following questions that the article doesn't answer:
1) Had the father spent the grocery money on drugs, alcohol, gambling, or a hooker?
2) Did the father steal filet mignon instead of a rump roast? Hamburger goes a lot further.
3) Does the father have a record?
4) Is the child mal-nourished?
5) Do they have foodstamps in Amsterdam?
6) Did the father have a job?
Giving this father a "pass" demonstrates failure to use logic. For all you know, the father wanted to have a steak fry for his friends, in the backyard.
My priority is the child, not finding excuses to forgive the father. See, in my mind, it is nearly unexcusable.

Insulting our country puts you into that category of "trash".

Rose said...that is sad- he was probably just trying to feed himself and/or his family, then he got scared and didn't want to pick up his son at the store so told them to call the mom. I feel bad for the 12 year old, but also for the father.

Cindy said...I did'nt see anywhere in the article, where the man was gay or married. But I would have to agree with some of the other readers comments that the man was probably stealing because he was hungry. If that was the case, too bad he did'nt have enough foresight to not take his child with him while committing a crime.

Either place, leaving your child whom is a pawn in a criminal action. What a great role model. I do believe, whether Amsterdam, NY or Amsterdam, in the Netherlands, if this person would ask the store to put him on credit or can he pay off his bill, or that he's in bad shape and wants to get the items for his family, or could he work off his balance, I am sure the owner would make acceptions. I would hope there are still good humanitarians in this corrupt world?

No one needs to steal meat, if you truly don't have anough money you can go to a foodcentre where they give food to the poor for free.

As far as this guy goes, he needs to spend some time in jail and serioulsly think about what he did wrong and how his flawed decision making will affect his kid in the future.

Francisco said...Shoplifting and leave a 12 year old behind. I'm sure in Amsterdam they have a family assistance programs. If not the thief has relatives. I'm not buying the "meat to feed the family" story. Check his background, maybe a druggie! But than again, retired law enforcement thinks that way.

(one woulld too think the 12yr old would have exited the store on own...not enough details to the whole incident but someting wrong when one must resort to stealing food !!!

Kathy said...From this article, unless you press onto the word, "shoplift," you'll not know that the author is writing about Dutch Amsterdam or Amsterdam, NY.
In any case, the man was definitely wrong stealing from the store, but worse, is leaving his child behind. The man obviously has more problems than mentioned. But, I do believe if he did ask for the goods, the storeowner or clerk, would've gladly given this to them. I do want to believe that there are good and giving persons still in this world.
My prayers are with this child's future well being, that this child will be able to break the cycle of the dysfunctions of his family and have much future success.

If he were 5 years older, he would have been charged as an accomplice. No doubt in my mind at all.

Kathy said...What bothers me, is most city children are basically street smart at 12 years old, and know exactly what their parent is doing or about. What was the child's role in this? Why didn't the child request to call the mother, especially when his father was asked to return to get him? Dysfunctional or divorced couple endangering the well being and corrupting the morals of a minor. Counseling is in order, and should be mandated by the courts that both parents and if more than this 12 year old, should attend.

Joyce said...How LOW can a parent be nowdays ?
This is NOT the first time a parent has brought their child into a store with them while they shoplift; and it is very unfortunate for the child to be put into that situation.
That certainly is NOT the example to be teaching a child; muchless anyone else.

tempgirl said...It's said how some people can reproduce. But what's really sad to me is why was he stealing food? He had no money to eat. He would risk going to jail, leaving his son, in order to get food. Not snacks, liquor, candy, etc. you have to question why he would take meat. It sounds like there's something bigger going on. Does the family need help? I wonder if there's a food pantry over there. It's a sad situation.
