A Net Generation side effect: your boss can google you

Social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook have have grown exponentially in recent years, and teenagers make up a large part of their membership. In fact, MySpace my be to teens today what going to the mall was for teens of the previous generation: a vital social community, that makes up a significant component in their social life both on and offline.

These kids have grown up with the Internet. They have no memory of clunky computers with tiny black screens and green text. They have no memory of PC's prone to crashing if you looked at them cross-eyed, or of using Encyclopedias, or pay phones. They are a generation used to the vernacular of instant message shorthand: ly4e, ttl, bfn. (Don't know what those mean? Look them up.)

But one thing these teens may not have counted on, is the fact that their future bosses can find out a whole lot about them just by typing their name into Google. While some teens may have lost potential employment because of information revealed on their MySpace page, others have used their Web presence to their advantage--by changing their personal Web pages reflect their job interests.

But, as anyone who spends time on the Internet knows: nothing ever really goes away once it goes into cyberspace, even if it's been deleted. Not to mention, anything you've ever written about your kids. Which begs the question: what will the generation of kids who've grown up with moms who blog do when they hit college? Will they hate us for spewing their poop stories all over the Internet? Or will they somehow manage to spin it into an advantage?
