Three Florida teachers arrested for having sex with students
Categories: Teens & tweens, Health & safety, In the news, Education
Future educators of America, let's get this straight -- you are not supposed to sleep with your students. I mean, I know it isn't explicitly taught in any of your courses, but believe me, it's implied. You should also not: drink in hotel rooms with teens, send dirty text messages, nor should you give them your underwear.Three...THREE...Florida teachers -- all from the same county -- were recently arrested for having sex with their teenage students. Police believe they have a strong case against all three, and the Hillsborough County School District is scrambling to put procedures into place to prevent this from happening again.
Perhaps nearly as disgusting as these teachers' behavior is the reaction from a local radio station which has created a contest about when the next school sex scandal will take place. I understand that many people feel that male students are not affected by these relationships in the same way that teen girls are, but the fact remains that these women crossed a boundary that is not meant to be crossed. It's nothing to joke about.

All emotional issues aside, there is a definite conflict of interest with a teacher having a relationship with a student. It opens the door to lots of issues pertaining to grades and unfair advantages regarding opportunities that might be awarded to students who "comply".
Colleges have been dealing with this situation for a long time until the scenario of the student involved with her professor has become cliche. For that matter, I can remember more than one guy in my highschool that was rumored to have been the favorite of a few teachers. Everybody laughed about it and went on about their business, but looking back everybody considered them to be lucky because they figured they wouldn't have to study hard to pass.
I do agree that there seems to be much more of an emotional impact on female students rather than the guys because I can remember one girl taking pills supposedly because she was so in love with one of the coaches at the school. Whether or not it was unrequited love that pushed her over the edge was debated at the time. I never heard of or noticed any of the guys who were rumored to be involved in the same activities being depressed in the least. In fact they looked pretty happy and downright smug. The old double standard in play once again.
Are same sex classrooms the answer? There are academic studies that say they increase student productivity. Would they also cut down on this thing happening over and over again?
I will interested to see what procedures they put in place for prevention and if they are successful. I hope they figure something out before my girls start school!

young boys who have been sexually abused manifest differently than young girls. While not likely to show the stereotypical signs of depression, young boys may be more prone to act overly aggressively or violently or develop sexual issues including sex addiction later in life.
Just because you don't see the damage doesn't mean it's not there.

I think they need to add a true-false question to the Teacher Credentialing Exam:
Sex with your students can be a good thing. T F

I somehow doubt these teachers thought it would be a good thing when they were first becoming a teacher...
I think they were carried away by the circumstances, and didn`t have enough self control.
I`ve taught several boys (high school) who I`ve thought "Wow, if only I weren`t married, weren`t 10 years older than him, and weren`t his teacher!" I`m certainly not attracted to children, but there are a lot of boys who seem a lot more mature, responsible, and adult than they really are in age.
I know better though, and have never *really* been tempted or given it any more than an "If I were a classmate!" thought. These teachers should have known better, and even if they REALLY felt attracted to these boys should have at LEAST had the self control to say "Sure, we can have a relationship... AFTER you turn 18 and graduate." Age-gap relationships can work out, I imagine, but at least wait until it`s not a crime.

Im so tired of hearing people in authority taking advantage of others and especialy when it involves children!!!! what is wrong with todays society? I have 3 children and this is why i teach my children NOT to trust anyone . it makes me sick to think about it. the district need to implicate more background checks and investigate them more . these petifiles teach in one state -get in trouble ,fired than they move to another state or district and prey on other children. how sick!! something has to be done to fight these trash!!!!!!!!!!!
