Perfume for babies?
Filed under: Babies, Places To Go, Decor

So this is a little odd. Perhaps I feel that way because it never occurred to me, but have you heard of--or tried--perfume for babies?
Not only are there adult perfumes that make us smell like a baby--Demeter fragrance is one of many who carry such a scent--but now (and perhaps there always have been and I've just happened upon these) there are scents for babies too. Johnson and Johnson offers a Johnson's baby cologne, in a nice floral and citrus scent of all things.
Since it's for babies the cologne is mild, gentle and alcohol free. Maybe this seems like a good thing, but I have to ask--what about that baby smell? I love that smell! It's such a nice smell I don't know why anyone would change it.
Oh well, different strokes for different folks.

What a way to start instilling a sense of inadequacy in your child. Would you really want to send your baby a message that you don't like the way they smell?

Tamyu said...While we haven`t ever used anything like this, and highly doubt I ever would... I have to ask - what is the big difference between this and scented shampoos/soaps/lotions people slather their children in?
The only one I can see is that the fragrance is packaged separately from the product.
No, let me correct myself. I probably WOULD have used this if I`d had a bottle. Babies smell all that strongly naturally - unless they spit up every 20 minutes, leaving that spoilt milk odor so deeply in their skin that just wiping doesn`t put a dent, let alone get rid of it. Even worse when it gets in their hair, while they`re sleeping so that it has plenty of time to dry before you try to get it out in the bath. (Which doesn`t work unless you use heavily scented adult products, something I have to admit to doing multiple times).
If this covers that odor and is safer for baby skin than my shampoo, I probably would have thought a product like this was nice for those times. Spoilt milk is the one thing that makes my husband seriously break down gagging, and actually run to the toilet to vomit a few times. Dirty diapers? No problem. But not spoiled milk.
If you`re just using this for fragrance, well, I`ll raise an eyebrow. But I still don`t quite think that`s quite a to the level of questioning their parenting... Especially when the "baby scent" most people think of isn`t natural to begin with. (It`s from baby shampoo, baby powder, and baby lotion.)

fairy said...Hi,
I agree with you Tamyu! I don't know why is such a big deal the use of baby colognes for some people. It is not a new idea! People have been using baby colognes for DECADES. They are part of the bath. The "smell"of "Vomiting" is the same in babies, kids,adults,..
If we don't use Baby Soap or wipes the "bad" smell of the baby will not go.All this products have fragrance. So what is the difference?
Guys, baby colognes are safe made by scientists, cosmetic chemist,..etc.
Give it a try! By the way, adults used them too. They are not just for babies

Anywho, I LOVE the way my baby smells, nothing in the world smells as great as the natural smell of a baby. Babies don't need perfume, that's what a bath and change of diaper is for...

What is the differance in using this and using baby shampoo, lotions, powders, even baby laundry soap.
The ONLY differance is that the baby perfume comes in a different delivery method. Read the labels of baby products and you will see that what makes them smell good is FRAGRANCE or in other terms perfume.
Unless you get a baby product that is fragrance free, there are always perfumes in them.
I say to each there own.
This goes right along with other parenting debates like, cloth diapers vs. disposable, bottle vs. breast, pacifiers vs. no pacifier, etc.
Each parent does what they think is best for their child and NO ONE can point a finger and say "your doing it wrong" because we have all been down the first time parent road and not a one of us have been so perfect as to not make a mistake.
Questioning a parents ability because of the use of a product INTENDED for babies is not only judgmental it's down right rude.
Remember when your pointing your finger at someone, you have 3 pointing right back at you.
