Mother's Day spending on the decline

Filed under: Just For Moms, In The News

For the first time in the five years that anyone has been keeping track, Mother's Day spending is expected to drop. Consumers last year spent an average of $139.14, while the average this year is expected to be $138.63. That's a 51 cent difference for those of you following along at home.

Those in the know cite rising gas prices and economic difficulties on the drop in spending. They do say, however, that moms in some areas may see larger gifts. While flowers, clothing, and spa certificates are popular, more moms this year will see electronic or jewelry purchases instead.

You know, I've got all the jewelry I need. Give me an extra hour or two to sleep in, then some pancakes made by a couple of sticky-fingered little girls and I'm good. Somehow, I doubt I'll notice that missing 51cents.

What about you? Do you celebrate with extravagant gifts or do you look forward to a little R&R instead?
