Mother's Day spending on the decline
Categories: Just For Moms, In The News
For the first time in the five years that anyone has been keeping track, Mother's Day spending is expected to drop. Consumers last year spent an average of $139.14, while the average this year is expected to be $138.63. That's a 51 cent difference for those of you following along at home. Those in the know cite rising gas prices and economic difficulties on the drop in spending. They do say, however, that moms in some areas may see larger gifts. While flowers, clothing, and spa certificates are popular, more moms this year will see electronic or jewelry purchases instead.
You know, I've got all the jewelry I need. Give me an extra hour or two to sleep in, then some pancakes made by a couple of sticky-fingered little girls and I'm good. Somehow, I doubt I'll notice that missing 51cents.
What about you? Do you celebrate with extravagant gifts or do you look forward to a little R&R instead?

My kids always take me to a water park. It started when they were really young and we went together as a family a lot. They loved it, so they thought I did.
Truth be told, I do enjoy it. It may not be what I would choose, but like most mothers, it is often more about the kids.
They are getting older and DD asked if I wouldn't rather do something else, but I said no. DH is going to be out of town, so the kids are taking me to a water park. Woo hoo!

Karen, that sounds like a blast! My hubby and I don't make a big to do over parent's days or anniversaries. we usually give cards 'signed' by the kids and we either go out to dinner or cook specially requested meals.
Since my husband usually works 7-12's time spent doing fun stuff with family is FAR more valuable than any gifts.

My birthday is in May, so sometimes I just ask for a combo gift. A spa day is what I want this year. I need a massage!

My husband and I both have parents that have divorced and remarried, so we have 4 sets of parents to plan gifts for. It gets stressful especially since 3 out of the 4 live out of state, and so it takes some planning ahead (something we are not good at) to make sure everything gets mailed out on time. It kind-of takes away from enjoying the holiday as parents ourselves, since we get burned out trying to figure out gifts for our parents and then we don't really do much for each other.
We were thinking of sending out family pictures this year (since we just had a new baby) but that means getting a family picture taken, and printed and mailed off. We still got a couple weeks, but with a new baby I don't know if it will happen. If not, then maybe we will just send cards this year because I don't want to stress about it.
