Obama answers mommybloggers
Filed under: In The News, Playground Bureau
There are still many facets of life in the United States where there is room for improvement, but it's still an incredible place to hang your hat and owe your taxes. Where else could you find a place where a serious presidential contender would take the time to answer the questions of a bunch of mommy bloggers?!
Disappointed at the lame questions and lack of follow-up in that last televised debate, the MOMocrats sent a list of questions they wished had been addressed to the Obama campaign. Amazingly, they received a response from Obama on a variety of topics ranging from torture to maternity leave.
Of course, these answers were likely edited and assessed by dozens of handlers and speech writers and this is excellent PR for Obama. But it's still pretty awesome that average citizens can have the ear of a presidential nominee, even for just a second in cyberspace.

Stefania Butler said...Wow, Angie. Thanks for the buzzkill closing on the end of your post. While we are not naive enough to think Obama himself sat down at his computer to answer our questions, you can't know for sure that "dozens of handlers and speech writers" wrote the responses. (Maybe just 3. Or 5.) And even if they did, why close such a nice link-loving post in such a negative way? I am fiercely proud and obviously fiercely protective of MOMocrats. I started it with two other very smart and talented bloggers and we've grown into a site with 22 writers coast-to-coast. Please forgive me if I'm a little bit irked by your remarks. We saw the fact that the Obama camp took the time to answer our and our readers' thoughtful questions as an extremely positive sign that he is paying attention to our concerns.

Derek said...You miss-quoted her. She never actually stated that "dozens of handlers and speechwriters" wrote the answers for him. She stated that they "were likely edited and assessed".
Then she quickly wrapped it up in a positive note by saying that "it's still pretty awesome that average citizens can have the ear of a presidential nominee, even for just a second in cyberspace."
But go ahead, make yourself look bad. Attack a nice postive blurb on your little questionare.

As past lead of ParentDish, I know you know how difficult it is to be balanced in opinion and keep all readers happy. If Angie hadn't placed a small caveat on this post, she would almost certainly havce been accused of placing an Unpaid Ad for Obama.
Kristen sent me the link to Momocrat's Obama post and I forwarded it to the team because I thought it deserved recognition: we all thought it was so cool that a presidential candidate had taken the time to respond to some smart, politically savvy Mom bloggers.
I read Angie's post as very positive and enthusiastic, and am sorry you didn't view it in the same light.

Regardless of how you feel about Bush and his policies, it is an undeniable fact that there is a tough road ahead for his successor. It looks like Obama is gearing up for the task. I read the responses and was impressed. I have gotten cut and paste responses from others before where it was obvious that my question was not being addressed given the response. Obama left us with more dignified responses. They addressed the questions and answered them, I thought, quite effectively. It is good to see that Obama is working for us. I hope he gets his chance to prove himself in office.
