Beyoncé sexing up children's clothing
Filed under: Big Kids, Tweens, Media, Decor
Back in 2004, singer Beyoncé and her mother Tina started their own fashion line, House of Deréon. The look, dubbed "where the sidewalk and catwalk meet", is designed to embody sexy sophistication for the modern woman. Finding some success in dressing grown-up ladies, Deréon has now expanded to include clothing for girls. That's all well and good, except it seems they forgot that 'sexy' isn't exactly what most of us are looking for when it comes to dressing our daughters.
Check out this ad for Deréon Girls and you will notice sweet-faced little girls wearing high heeled pumps, feather boas and bright red lipstick. This ad campaign might be called "where the playground and prostitute meet." If you can manage to look past the inappropriate accessories and somewhat suggestive poses, the clothes themselves aren't that bad. Maybe a little on the tacky side, but not overtly sexual.
Just what message are they trying to send here? It is never to early to begin dressing like a fashion-impaired adult? Had they presented the clothing line in a more age-appropriate way, would parents have reacted with "well, that's just not sexy enough for my kid?"
Seriously, does sex really sell when it comes to children's clothing?

And while I hoped their adult line caught on, I hope this sinks to the depths of the ocean like a lead ball. I think it disgusting to dress little girls sexy. Oh, doesn't the sister have a little girl? That must be where this comes from. I don't want monsters looking at my little girls as sex objects. If it doesn't offend them to have a gross man looking at that baby's little bottom like he'd like to touch it, they need to rethink that, just like they need to rethink this clothing line.

In other words - EEWWW.
I love my kid, and I let her dress in clothes that won't embarrass her. BUT - at six years old, I draw the line at this junk. Not that the clothes are anything but tacky (and they are tacky - not the image I want for my kid, but still) however - I'm still in charge of the wallet, and I do NOT choose to put money in the pockets of people whose image for my child includes this over-sexed, under-tasteful ad campaign.

There's micro mini skirts for kids, low cut tank tops, you name it. But I don't see any of it in here. The only thing I can think of that you have a problem with the actual CLOTHES is the fact that they put designs on them.
Yes the make-up and shoes were a little too much, but unfortunately that was a bad move. Take those out, and take the designs off, and you have typical non-slutty everyday kids clothes. Take a look at some of the clothes in the Hilary Duff line, or even just a normal kid's line and then come back and say these clothes are revealing.

I think it's intresting that Beyonce is attacked for her ad, when there is nothing sexual about the actula clothes. The accesories yes, but the same boas, and feathered "jeweled" heels can be found in any toy store because that's what little girls have played with for generations. No matter what, little girls look up to their mothers and older women and want to be like them. Heck we encourage it by giving them "life like"baby dolls to practice "momming" with when they are toddlers, and complain they grow up to fast? Obviously nobody expects you to let you kids walk out the house like this, if you do it shows obvious problems with your judgement. In this ad, the little girls are obviously just playing around. They just have higher quality dress up accesories. And yes professionals did their makeup. Do you think little girls want to look like clowns? Obviously the children are models (whole nother issue guys), they know how to really use makeup. The overt sexuality in this ad is there because you want it to be. Please tell me what's sexual about a little girl playing a piano. Or the ones behind her pretending to be in a band, or sitting in a chair (just like kids do), or even just posing to take a picture. what was she supposed to do? If they didn't pose, they wouldn't be modeling.

If a denim jacket and jeans are slutty then wouldn't all women be considered sluts. A lot of clothing made for children today are short and have stupid skulls on them, but I see nothing wrong with Beyonce's clothing line.

Tasha said...If dressing up as an adult made a child into an adult, then I'd dress up as a doctor and collect $150,000 a year salary. Children want to grow up, but parents shouldn't mistake how they dress for who they are. If you can't tell the difference between a child who dresses up and an adult, then the problem is entirely yours.

michel'le said...i have a little cousin who is 8, and i couldn't imagine buying something like this for her. dress up is one thing, but having little girls walk around in public like this is just eye candy for the pedophiles that roam rampid. i honestly can't believe these 'kiddie fashions' one days our little girls are going to grow up, and if their used to high heels and red lipstick at this age, think of how they'll look once they'll wanna look once they hit freshman year at high school.

Greekie said...Wow. Dress-up was never THIS erotic. lol. Clothing like this pushes new boundaries as to how old you can be to show off for males. I really don't get it. It's almost as if we WANT pedophiles to pick up our children. Come on, if they look like slutty whores, then they're gonna pick them up first. We need to realize that little girls are not prosties. Once we get that, maybe we can start getting black men to wear clothing that isn't meant for Andre the Giant, we can get white people to stop wearing Aeropostale, American Eagle, Hollister, and other clothes just to show off "Hey, I spent $40 on a shirt! How rich am I?", and maybe fix the sensualistic nature of American culture. We view women as sex idols. We basically see women for what they're worth just by the clothing. I may not agree with "Modest Marie", but we need to stop trimming girl's shirts and wrapping them in uncomfortable leather and making them put on toxic make-up. Only then will the world take us seriously. Reply to this, I want to keep this debate going. Peace out, I'm going to the mall to get some Aeropostale jeans. lol.

THE OVERSIZED SHOES AND HATS, PLAY BOAS, AND COSTUME JEWELRY, INDICATES TO PEOPLE WITH A FUNCTIONING BRAIN THAT THERE IS A DRESS- UP THEME GOING ON IN THIS ADVERTISEMENT.
IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE CLOTHES THEN DON'T BUY THEM, I AM SURE THIS CLOTHING LINE WILL BE JUST FINE WITHOUT YOUR PENNIES AND YOUR WORTHLESS COMMENTS!

Mini said...It's a shame that anyone would think it's ok to dress a child in grown up clothing much less sexy grown up clothing.
We have enough predators out there targeting our children. Now we have clothing manufactorers trying to make children feel older by dressing them in clothing that a adult would wear to attract the wrong kind of attention of men.
Personally I feel any child hurt because of wearing this "sexy" kind of clothing I believe the parents, owner of the store who carried this "sexy" clothing, factory which made the "sexy" clothing, and any "star" who lent their name to the "sexy" clothing should all do serious prison time. If, God forbid, the child is killed; FIRST DEGREE MURDER charges should be brought up on all who had anything to do with the child wearing this "sexy" clothing line.
I was shocked one day when I went to my local super WM and found a skirt outfit for my 4 year old granddaughter. She loves Disney anything. I saw a cute Tinkerbell skirt out fit until I read what was writen on the shirt. Tinkerbell was sitting with her legs spread out with her hands reasting on the ground between her legs with the words "Tink This" written below it. I called for the manager of the store who agreed with me and that he wouldn't even want his daughter wearing such a shirt.
WAKE UP AMERICA!!! LETS START PROTECTING OUR CHILDREN!!!

Jae said...If anyone buys that crap for their child it says more about them than it does for Beyone. She is just another rich b out to make another dollar. As parents we MUST use common sense when dealing with these types of things and keep our children...children. Do not give in to the money hungry ppl of the world that don't give a rats arse about your kids.
