Was Jenna wise to skip the White House wedding?
Categories: Celeb kids, Life & style, In the news
My husband gets a kick out of the fact that I still refer to our wedding as "my" wedding. I don't do it on purpose. Seriously. It's a subconscious tick of mine that I justify by reminding him that he was never interested in the planning and details anyway. Besides, weddings have forever been the province and dream of the bride. Her dream, her day, has always been my undiplomatic take on it. So, I felt more than a little hypocritical when I scoffed at the news that Jenna Bush opted to forgo a White House wedding affair for her parent's Crawford, Texas ranch. 'Who let her make THAT decision?', I cattily thought.
Last month I attended the Papal Welcoming Ceremony on the South Lawn. The place just screams "Wedding" or "Wedding Reception", or at least "Wedding Pictures". Yes, there is the White House social secretary to contend with, but I've seen this classy woman with her indispensable pearls and clipboard interviewed on television and frankly, Jenna would be hard pressed to find a more knowledgeable and efficient wedding planner in all of her beloved Lone Star state. Besides, everyone knows that the Bushes are famously down-home people who have, with only a few notable exceptions (Queen Elizabeth, Pope Benedict) adapted White House protocol to suit their Texas-casual style. I'm certain Jenna would have been able to do the same with her wedding day.
And what's with her "I'm not glamorous enough" explanation? The Bush girls have always been infinitely more glamorous (and fun) than the painfully gawky and reclusive Chelsea Clinton.
So it was with my own dashed White House wedding dreams for Jenna that I called my mom to dish and complain about the way-too-private-for-a-first-daughter wedding at the humble (by comparison)Texas ranch.
My mother surprised me with her thoroughly modern response: "Good for her!"
What? I was in shock. This is the same woman who scrimped and saved to take us both on a cruise aboard the QE 2 my senior year.
"Look," she continued, "I think it is very classy of her. The White House is the "people's" house and too many presidents and candidates (I knew she was referring to the Clintons here), act as if it is theirs. This sense of entitlement is plain tacky. She's setting a good example. As for the secrecy, why should they invite the press? The press has never been kind to them."
And with those sage words, my mother changed my mind.
Congratulations to Jenna and Henry on her, I mean, their wedding.

I was actually surprised that People.com had as many pictures of their wedding. I'm glad she decided on Texas. The outdoor pictures look beautiful and she will always have that wall to look at and remember it was built for her wedding.
PS: I guess that means no new baby yet... Will you post a note to let us know?

Get a grip.
Chelsea Clinton was *12* when her father took office. Find me a 12-year-old who isn't gawky.
...and I suppose "fun and glamourous" to you includes the Bush twins' underage drinking/partying?
I'll bet you'd be singing a different tune if Bill and Hillary had twins who were "recklessly underage drinking and setting terrible moral examples for the millions of young girls watching them" and Chelsea was the intellectual, mature, activist daughter of George and Lara. Just a thought.

I have to agree with April. Get a grip. I usually agree with you Rachel, but your catiness towards the Clintons is just too much. the Bush twins are "fun and glamorous" to you because they are the children of a republican. Chelsea is "gawky" to you because her last name is Clinton. Chelsea has grown in to an outstanding and beautiful young woman - give credit where credit is due.
Were you critical of the Bush twins for their underage drinking? Probably not. I'm sure if it was Chelsea, you would have been grandstanding for days.

Was the Chelsea dig necessary?

I agree with the others that your dig at Chelsea Clinton was completely uncalled for. Since when is "fun and glamorous" underage drinking and sticking your tongue out at the press?
Chelsea Clinton has grown into a lovely young lady. I would much rather my daughters viewed her as a role model than the Bush twins.

I agree with your mom!
Both Bush girls have ALWAYS shown class and concern for humanity. They don't need or want the spotlight on themselves. They have worked in inner city schools, traveled to imporvershed nations to do humanitarian work. And (this is not a dig on Chelsea, simply a comparision), Chelsea works on Wall Street and spent her grad school days plastered across the tabloids drunk. Funny, how the "greedy capitalist Republican" kid turned out whereas the "socially liberal, caring Democrat" child took a money making path.
I've always admired the Bush girls and Laura Bush for their integrity and behind the scenes work.
