Mother in deadly MySpace hoax indicted

Filed under: In The News, Playground Bureau

The mother alleged to have come up with the juvenile plan of creating a fictional MySpace account to keep tabs on what another girl was saying about her daughter that resulted in the teen hanging herself has been indicted by a federal grand jury.

Lori Drew has been charged with on one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress on Megen Meier.

"I'm thrilled that this woman is going to face charges that she has needed to face since the day we found out what was going on, and since the day she decided to be a part of this entire ridiculous stunt," Megen's mother Tina told The Associated Press.

I've witnessed some pretty mind-boggling acts of parental involvement but nothing on the Lori Drew level. However, the possibility that this situation might not just the result of a highly disturbed individual with maturity issues but an example of super-sized helicopter parenting haunts me.

If the latter is true, it's a pretty terrifying thought that we might just be seeing just the tip of the iceberg of what some parents might be capable of or be willing to do when it comes to their kids.
