Teen jailed for courthouse call
Filed under: Teens, In The News
Kids these days! I tell ya! I can understand bringing your cell phone to court -- you might break down on the way there or back and need to call for a tow truck or you might just want to call someone afterwards and let them know you'll be home for dinner instead of in three to five. I could even understand forgetting to turn it off or set it to silent mode and looking around sheepishly and apologetically while you frantically try to shut the thing up, should someone call while the court is in session.Actually taking a call, however, seems a bit much, especially if you're sitting in the front row. Apparently, magistrate Daynor Trigg of Australia's Northern Territory thinks so too, and told a seventeen-year-old so when the boy did just that. The teen was in court to answer two charges of breaking and entering and stealing when his phone rang. "How dare you answer a phone in court ... that allows transmissions from court ... which is a serious contempt,'' shouted the judge.
The teen responded flippantly and the judge sent him off to cool down in the court's holding cells. Two hours later, the boy was back in court where he apologized to the judge, saying "Sorry your honour for um ... having my phone on and answering it during court and backchatting." What made the boy's actions even worse is that the phone call came in moments after the judge had warned the court to turn off the cell phones.
"One of the problems that seems to be developing within our community." the judge opined from the bench, "is that there is so much time devoted by schools and others to telling people what their rights are, without the corresponding lessons being taught as to what people's obligations are." I agree completely. In many places, we enjoy great freedoms, but with those rights come great responsibilities as well. Hopefully, this kid learned his lesson well.

And not ALL teens are direspectful!!! I have a 17 yr old son and he always remebers to silence his cell phone when at and important meeting, such as church, court, library, etc:

If he answered the phone in court the judge should have taken his cell phone off and started having one of those obnoxiously loud conversations we always here. The kid gets what he gives.

Even I think this is utter bullroar.
If this boy doesn't know better than to turn off his cell when a JUDGE, of all people, asks the court to do so, he deserves whatever punishment is dished out to him. Where I'm from and in my school, if a teacher even so much as sees your phone, it's instantly taken away. You won't get it back until the next morning, no if's, and's, or but's about it (with the exception of work if the phone is absolutely needed). I've had my phone taken away twice. Because I deliver pizzas, though, I need my phone in case I get lost. But the fine for disobeying the rules is (first offense) an after school detention, followed by suspension. If it happens more than twice, it's simple; the school takes your phone until a parent can come and pick it up for you.
What kid wants to go through that?
What kind of moron wouldn't turn off his phone in a court room?
Why is it that common courtesy and respect for authority can't be followed? I know I'm not much of an exception to this rule, but I've learned my lesson and I can say that it is so not worth it.
Parents, if you're going somewhere important, take the cell phone away! It saves everyone the trouble and your embarrassment!

I don't understand why cellphones are allowed anywhere--especially in moving vehicles. How many people have to die in auto accidents, because of cellphone use, before they're banned. The cellphone is the worst invention, ever! Even when not in cars, people use them standing in the checkout line at the store, standing in the middle of the highway, and worse! Cellphones should be illegal, everywhere in the world!

Sometimes you get lucky and have a child that listens to you and abides by your rules. Many times kids are testing out their limits and are egged on by their so called friends. Parents can only do so much. My parents grounded me, sold my car, spanked me, left me in jail when I got a DUI and it wasnt until I was ready to grow up that I started to listen. Actually the DUI was my wake up call but still I had to decide that I was ready to be an adult and not a punk. Parents have no control over that. Because of that DUI, I now get along better with my parents and have not had a drink of alcohol in 15 years. It would have been better had I just listened before but a lesson learned is a lesson learned.

So since we are assigning blame here I would like to post upon you the following disgraces and crimes against humanity...
-globabl warming
-high gas prices
-rapists
-pedophiles
-war
As you can see here, none of the teenagers have attributed to this at all so by your logic I can claim that all adults are the reason for pedophiles, rapists, ect. Its a nice thing to know that...btw, we dont start wars, we die in them...nice thing isnt it?

Larry Cox said...The problem nowadays is that kids have no respect for their elders, their parents, or anybody. They have no compassion and they always take the easy out instead of working hard to make a difference. My 16 year old daughter would rather get a GED instead of getting a diploma. A diploma tells people you did your best and went the mile. GED's are for dropouts. She would use her cellphone when the deskphone was 6 inches away from her. We had to shut them off because she ran up the bill from $200 a month to almost $500.Sometimes they act like they have no brain cells and never, ever argue with a teenager. You'll lose!

inglesidenancy said...I am glad this judge taught the teenager a lesson, but it is not only kids that abuse the cell phones. I have been in many meetings at work and have them go off and people actually take the call! I also have been in church during a funeral and people's cell phones were ringing. When did it become a society that people need to available 24/7? Cell phones are a good thing for emergencies, but that is it.

Larry Cox said...Don't forget Ironyataglance, some of those rapists and pedophiles ARE teenagers! If you drive, you're helping to poison the air like all the rest of us and the high gas prices? If you drive, you have to buy gas too. All of us are contributing one way or another. Every time you use the bathroom, where do you think the waste goes? Some people think a sewer treatment plant. Maybe it does or maybe it gets dumped in a river not too far from you. It happens. You like to use electricity too, like the rest of us adults for your computer, xbox, whatever. What makes that power? Coal, gas, or nuclear? Here where I live we use Hydropower. The dams provide the electricity. It's a big world and we need to take care of it or the resources will vanish. Keep that in mind next time you flip a switch or flush the toilet.

When I was growing up in the 80's you basically had to use the Mall phone and pay with change. Or ask to use some business phone. Anyway, like with most things, have some responsiblity and commen sense. This kid before the Judge was to speak about any charges should of kept the phone in the car. But I have come to terms and I think the older folks have realized that the youth of america are all about owning all the new technology and it is here to stay just figure a way to teach how to be responsible with it all. For me I grew up without this and that and to be honest I am glad because I think there is something real lost in today's world with having too much stuff and plus always going way too fast and I need this and that...very hard to be mellow today, that is for sure.

There must be some correlation between mobile use and illiteracy. Everytime I'm somewhere mobile phone use is not allowed, and there are signs to this effect, there are always 2 or 20 people using their mobile.
