Diet Coke gets a little healthier
Filed under: Health & Safety: Babies, Nutrition: Health
Did you know that Diet Coke isn't the healthiest beverage choice for your kids? No? Well, surprise, surprise, it isn't. At least it wasn't. It seems that Diet Coke -- a staple in our house -- contains sodium benzoate, a preservative that prevents mold. Unfortunately, it can also damage DNA and lead to hyperactivity in children.Coca-cola, however, has decided to stop using the chemical, also known as E211, in its drinks due to consumer demands. E211 will be gone from all Diet Coke by the end of the year and from other drinks as soon as possible. As yet, the company has not found a suitable replacement for its drinks with a higher juice content such as Fanta, Dr Pepper, and Sprite. E211 is not used in regular Coke.
Peter Piper, a professor of molecular biology at Sheffield University, found that E211 can alter parts of DNA that may be linked to cirrhosis of the liver and Parkinson's disease. In addition, researchers at Southampton University have linked sodium benzoate to hyperactivity in children. Whether or not these findings are accurate, they are certainly cause for concern. Our kids don't drink sodas, but if they did, this might be a good reason to put a stop to the practice.

Sandra said...The Coca Cola company should be ashamed.
There is research showing that Aspartame, (Nutrasweet) metabolizes into formaldehyde when raised to - guess what- BODY temperature. Gee, that cannot be good for brain cells or any other cells in the body... Guess someone with big money got that through the FDA back when the INSECTICIDE was found to have a sweet taste- guess what it was--- aspartame. There are more reports to the FDA of side effects from aspartame than you could imagine--- but lets just go ahead and poison the American public.

carolinec74 said...sucralose and aspartame are 2 different sweetners, and are 2 very different products.
I am allergic to nutrasweet (aspartame) and can't not have anything that contains it anyway, but have had warnings since shortly after it came out, especially for children
Splenda is better that sweet n low, and nutrasweet, but they should be used sparingly anyway

Frank said...Well they have all these studies that prove or disprove all the claims well I work for coke and I can't say one way or another if those claims are true however I can say that the biggest problem is that in this country we do not seem to be able to consume anything in moderation I see my customers all the time buying 3 or 4 or even 10 12 packs of soda if people would buy 1 less 12 pack of soda and maybe 1 more case of Dasani water or eat 1 less cheeseburger and eat 1 more salad maybe all of these health problems that we all seem to have wouldn't be quite as bad. And by the way if you go onto cokes website you will find many alternatives to soda that are just as tasty but much healthier.

robertyoung said...this is nothing new, the f.d.a.learned of this 16 years ago, they did not ban it but came to an agreement with the soda companies to gradually stop using it, some companies replaced it with sugar and chemicals called chelating agents, others have done nothing yet, in the comments no one has hit it yet, the soda companies are running scared, maybe because there is a chance of them being sued, here is the real reason, the two ingreedients are---benzoate, a preservative, and ---ascorbic acid, a form of vitamin c, when these two items interact they form benzene which is a carcinogen which can be linked to leukemia-and other cancers of the blood- anemia- and chromosome aberations, benzine is particularly toxic to children, in the united kingdomi think it has been banned, if you want to check go to www, motherearthnews.com--june/ july 2006, also go to www.ewg.org and search for benzene lisy

Rose Dillon said...Vicky, I agree diet soda is very bad for you. Aspartame is very bad for the intestines and can cause tumors. Heard this from more than two doctors. I drink plain coffee in the morning and water all day long. A lot safer that way. They should ban diet soda. A good sweetner is Stivia and it is very natural. I have tried it before and believe me it is very sweet without sugar in it.

I gave it to my husband and he said what is this? I tried it and thought it was the most disgusting thing I ever tasted. It belonged in the toilet. And even the toilet is too good for that. So stick to the REAL THIING. If one is worried about his/her diet or medical concerns, then limit yourself. Enjoy one can or bottle of the real thing is better than an imitation.

to Orange Drink made with Equal, but my tooth got worse.
The pain was unreal. I couldn't understand why, then I read the
ingredients on the Equal packets. It contains Dextrose, a sugar.
Also, I realy believe that cold viruses feed on sugar.
It seemed like every time I consumed a lot of sweets, I would get
a bad cold the next day or two.
I tried some experiments and those Rhino viruses love sugar.
If you get a lot of colds, chances are you have a lot of disolved sugar in your blood.

I get a cold can out of the fridge and pour it into a tall glass of crushed ice. Mmmm......just like the real thing but with 0 calories. I agree that water is the best thing but sometimes you just want a Coke.
