Gordon Ramsay has interesting advice on getting kids to eat vegetables

I'm sure by now you've heard of Gordon Ramsay. He's the British head chef and star of television's reality show "Hell's Kitchen." He's also something of a world-class chef, from what I understood. From what I understand now, he's also a father.
And this father has some unusual suggestions regarding getting his children--his daughter, to be exact--to eat vegetables. According to Chef Ramsay, he gets his daughter to eat her leafy greens by telling her they'll make her boobs get bigger! Ramsay admits he tells his ten-year-old daughter, Megan, this story, and that she believes him. His proof? He claims she eats whole heads of lettuce and says, "Dad, look!"
Before I know it, I will have a daughter on my hands. Eventually, she will be old enough to wonder such things as what might make her breasts bigger. I'm more inclined to leave such things to the schoolyard than try this trick. I'm not sure what freaks me out more--Gordon talking to his daughter about her boobs (which shouldn't really be such a big deal), his assistance in helping her think they need to be bigger, or the fact that he refers to them as 'boobies!' Ah, to each their own I suppose.

Stephanie said...If it gets the kid to eat her veggies then tell her. I think that's hilarious that he tells her that.
When I was a child and went to a babysitter, for her to get me to eat the crust on my bread and pizza she would tell me that the crust would make me beautiful. I believed her then, and today. Sometimes the crust is my favorite part of a sandwich.

Cathy said...Why oh why should the size of someone's boobies matter...especially at the tender age of 10... and why oh why would a supposedly loving father, lead his ten yr old daughter to believe having bigger boobies is better... I guess it matters to him but I hope someone tells her it not all men prefer big ones...in fact some men are grossed out by them...my gorgeous talented hubby for instance...and believe me.. lucky for me.. I was not well endowed.

His daughter's the one that decided that on her own. If he were a bad father he'd just let her eat candy & junk till she got fat & never learned to appreciate healthy & different foods. They can't live off of soda & chicken nuggets forever. Sheesh.

Cyn said...He used to be a soccer player, and he is a bit brash. But I have seen him, on shows, with his daughters and he interacts with them beautifully. Also, he has them raise animals, which they later eat, to teach them about the cycle of life. It's not something I would do, but I can understand a chef wanting his children to have an appreciation of where their food comes from.

Lisa said...My parents would tell me if I ate sesame seeds my "boobies" would get big. While I know that this is not the reason I have breasts, I ate the sesame seeds on the hamburger buns without complaining. With all the parents in the world who are totally screwing up their kids in ways that are unimaginable to the average human being, you think that maybe some people are taking this a bit too far?!?!?!?!? I say, whatever makes them eat their veggies!!!!

EYES said...LOL Come on people...give it a rest! Why must everyone pass judgement on everything? A few years ago My aunt told my daughter that peas make you beautiful... she wasnt telling my daughter youre ugly she told a lil girl something to eat her veggies. my daughter in turn used the line on my youngest son who KNOWS he adorable and eats peas now!
there was nothing wrong with what he said... he gets his kid to eat healthy right?

martha said...i think it's a great idea. It goes to show that maybe they are close and can talk about boobs, periods and maybe even sex someday. it's 2008 and parents need to be more open about these things. if telling her that her boobs will grow to eat veggies than so be it. at least he's not telling her to drink, smoke or have sex with random boys.

Allison said...Remember, Ramsay is a CHEF, so if I were his daughter I probably wouldn't think there was anything creepy about it. It would be like, "My dad knows food, he's probably right".
I really wouldn't read deeper into it (e.g. ZOMG HE'S SEXUALISING HIS DAUGHTER! GASP!), there's no point getting worked up over something that isn't that important in the grand scheme of things.

Jeff said...All I have to do is tell my son that if he doesn't eat his vegetables he'll turn into an ignorant, opinionated parentdish commenter with too much time on his hands.
Oddly, this tactic works with just about anything.
