Jacel Brown was only seven months pregnant and had been cleared by her doctor to travel with her husband. So imagine her surprise -- and I imagine her terror -- when she went into premature labor and delivered her son during a 14-hour flight from the Philippines to New York.

The baby, named Jadan, was delivered by Jacel's husband Larry and a Korean surgeon in the kitchen area of the plane. Though Jadan will be hospitalized for a while, likely due to his prematurity, both mom and baby are doing well, despite a rocky start.

I remember asking my OB if I could travel to my in-laws for Christmas, two weeks before my due date. "If you're ok with the idea of delivering your baby there," was his reply. I wasn't, and took comfort in my hospital being nearby. I can't imagine having a baby in an airplane... whew!
Most experts say that air travel is safe for pregnant women during most of their pregnancy, but that they shouldn't travel by air past 36 weeks. What happened to the Brown's couldn't have been predicted, of course, and thankfully, everyone is doing well.
