Surprising dogs breeds to be wary of
When you think of dangerous dog breeds, which animal do you picture: a pit bull or a wiener dog?
According to the results of research published in Applied Animal Behaviour Science, the breed most prone to aggression is the dachshund. New research that involved questioning 6,000 dog owners, found that one in five dachshunds have bitten (or tried to bite) strangers, a similar number have attacked other dogs, and that one in 12 have even snapped at their owners.
Prior research on dog aggression focused solely on dog bite statistics. Using that data, breeds like Pit Bulls, Rottweilers, and Dobermans were thought to pose the most danger. Researchers now feel prior studies were not painting a full picture, as most dog bites (especially those of smaller dogs) go unreported and were not included in the past.
Chihuahuas ranked second on the list of aggressive dogs, while Jack Russell Terriers came in third.
Just like with people, it's not fair to stereotype an entire group based on the actions of a few. But it's also good know some small dogs might not be the ideal choice for children.
| Its about time people realize small dogs are the most aggressive | |

| I'm not so sure about the findings. | |
| Complete hogwash, everyone knows big dogs are the aggressive ones. |

Mike said...I train personal protection dogs, and have been doing this for over 22 years. All dog breeds are aggressive and all dogs can bite. People need to understand that dogs do not think like people. They view us as part of their pack. Anyone who says "My dog wouldn't hurt a fly" but it is protective of the family has no clue on what their dog is capable of!

Giselle said...The most dangerous species of all is still the "human being". Ready to kill for profit, fun and greed. No animal, big or small is that cruel. I know both, dachshunds and pitbulls and both seem to be less frightening than some humans. We here more about murdered, tortured and raped human beeings than dog bites!

Mom said...True but that aggresive dachsund could rip the face off of the hitting toddler just like a large dog can. Killing it after the fact isn't going to help the toddler much be it a big dog or small.

The only time I was ever bitten was by a dachshund, through my clothing, thank goodness.

I have had dogs for 50 years from a fox terriors, dobermans, shephards, beagles, and labs. The dobermans would swim with 30 kids at our pool parties. The key is the owner being the leader of the pack and to ALWAYS enforce the rules, discipline and boundaries no matter what size the dog is. The same applies to humans, adults and children alike.
Watching the Dog Whisperer on The National Geographic Channel has enlightened me on the way dogs think, I highly recommend watching it.

We have a very large 1 yr old doberman. We have socialized this animal from the day we got him. He is gentle and loving and would never hurt any other animal or person unless threatened. On the other hand we also have a min pin that is 13. He is a little bastard and must always have his way. (MY fault) He is so small that he really can't hurt anyone but he would if he could. He rips into the big doberman and scares him to death. It's amazing to watch. It definitely is about attitude. I have the living proof. :)

Stephanie said...Size has nothing to do with it. It all depends on how they are treated and raised from puppies on. I'm tired of people always talking about the big dogs being prone to attacks, and thats only because little dogs attacking are rarely reported. I was bitten badly on my hand by a large shepard mix when I worked at a vet, but also was bitten by a yorkshire terrier PUPPY! and was attacked but not bitten by an extremely aggressive Jack Russel, Cocker Spaniel and a Mini Schnauzer. Size has nothing to do with it. Its just a load of excuses for bad training and lack of respect for the animal.

On the other hand, someone nearby has cocker spaniels that lunge at everyone in the neighborhood. My old dog got attacked by a cocker spaniel too. Nasty little sh*ts.

They are not aggressive to my 3 year old son who likes to cuddle and pet them. They do however make great guard dogs, and bark and are wary of strangers. They soon warm up to strangers and are fast friends.

alyssa said...it really only depends on how the people raise them. when people see little dogs they tend to spoil them and forget about training. my friend owns 2 chihuahuas and trained the properly and not one of them has never bitten anyone. i own a yorkie and a german shepherd and they havent agressivley bitten anyone either.

the death went to deaf ears. Nothing was done to the dog or the owner. We need to enforce the laws and only allow responsible people ( preliminary screening) adopt any animal. its not about the dog but the owner !!!

Not to say that some breeds you have to be very careful and research their blood lines ect, but please do not try to bash every rotti that there is it is not fair, I will agree that the more aggressive breeds to require a bit more training.
I had a rotti for 8 years and he was a wonderful animial and a great friend and could be trusted with any small child, But we must not forget they are animals. I have a Chihuahua and I am the first to tell you that I am trying to teach her to be more tolerant to young children as she does not seem to like anyone under 5 ft. I also feel it is the parents responsibility to teach their children how to behave when around any dog.

ScrappyPeanut said...I agree that small dogs are aggressive, but more aggressive than larger dogs... Too many people want to blame a breed rather than the owner. In my opinion, it is ALL on how you raise and train/ discipline the dog. My mother has 3 small dogs and the older 2 are absolute sweethearts but the youngest is horrible. It attacks my dog that is much bigger than it. My large breed dog is such a baby, she won't do anything back to this little dog when she gets bit. I've raised my dog not to bite but to bark. A big dog barking is much more effective than a dog who bites. No one will call the police and file a lawsuit because they were barked out. I won't have to worry about having to put my dog down because she barked at someone.
