Fast thinking moms stop crimes with kindness
Categories: In The News, Weird But True
When you have a guest in your home, Miss Manners says that the polite thing to do is to offer them a refreshment. And though she never said anything about being polite to intruders, two moms recently thwarted intruders by offering their attackers something to drink. When faced with a knife-wielding robber who followed her and her six-month-old baby into her apartment, a Japanese woman told the man she had no money, but made the man a cup of tea. While he drank it, he calmed down, put his knife away, and spent 20 minutes talking about himself. The mother took advantage of his self-absorption and ran outside to call police.
Back across the pond in L.A., an intruder entered the home of a 47-year-old woman and attacked her in her bed. Her mother, who was sleeping in the next room, came to help and was slammed against the wall. She smelled beer on the man's breath and said to him, "I don't know about you, but I could use a beer." He accepted, and while the threesome sat in the living room drinking their brew, one of the women was able to slip away on a bathroom break and call police.
Talk about quick thinking! Neither the women nor the baby in these stories were harmed, and the American criminal has been caught.

My drug addict neighbor broke into my apartment once, and I, and two of the other neighbors, drove him to the hospital because he cut his hands breaking my window.
He was begging me not to call police and literally would not get more than a foot away from me. I was scared, so I took him to the hospital. It was the only way I could think of to get him away from me. Then, I called police and they went to the hospital and arrested him.
I still get criticism for doing that, but I like to think this validates my story a little.

She is a better person than me. If that happened to me and my child(ren), I would have slit his throat or shot him the second I got the chance. I really doubt I could let someone live after brandishing a weapon in the presence of my daughters.

Sorry, if you break in my home all bets (and offers of hospitality) are off. If you think that kindness will buy time, certainly you should try that. But, should you feel guilty for calling the authorities when their guard is down? Absolutely!

Ooops, excuse me. I meant to say that you should NOT feel guilty about calling the police on them.

This happened to me. An intruder came into my home when I was a single woman. He started undressing me and that is when I woke up and screamed, ran and broke my ankle.
That is when I switched gears, I wasn't getting away. I then started chatting with him and acting like he was a friend visiting. He then chatted all night long, only pulled out his thing once and I told him to put that away. He left in the morning and I went to the emergency room.
I am pretty sure I avoided being raped/killed. He did tell me he had just gotten out of prison, he had prison tats, they never found him.
I sometimes wonder if I would have gotten away if not for falling on the stairs, I sometimes wonder if I had been physically ok if it would have been worse because I would have fought. The only reason I switched gears was because I couldn't even walk let alone fight. I wonder if that is what saved me.
