Virgin Mobile asks kids to strip for charity
Filed under: Teens, Health & Safety: Babies, In The News
It guess it sounded like a good idea on paper: a national campaign to collect clothing donations for homeless youth featuring non-homeless, fully-clothed youth. Except for the part where the clothed youth are supposed to take their clothes off. Sponsored by cell-phone company Virgin Mobile and National Network For Youth (NN4Y), the Strip2Clothe campaign asks young people to make a video of themselves stripping and post it online. Clothing companies then donate new clothes based on the number of times the video is viewed.
This strip-tease idea doesn't sit well with some of the organizations the campaign is intended to benefit. Catholic Charities, among other groups, has complained saying the effort is inappropriate and that it exploits young people. Rebecca Lentz, a spokeswoman for Catholic Charities, is especially horrified because she says that it isn't uncommon for kids who find themselves on the streets to be sexually exploited within days of becoming homeless.
Victoria Wagner, chief executive of NN4Y, says the program is now being re-evaluated. "It's unfortunate it's become so explosive," she said. Unfortunate, indeed, since many of those who are complaining are members of NN4Y and were not informed of the campaign before it kicked off.
To be fair, the rules for video submission stipulate that there is to be no full nudity and the videos I viewed were in no way risque. Like it or not, the campaign appears to be going quite well - the site reports close to 150,000 donations so far.

Christina said...I called Virgin Mobile and they said it IS TRUE! You can call them for yourself at 1-888-322-1122 or email them at ourteam@virginmobileusa.com, I found their contact information on their offcial website at http://web.virginmobileusa.com/about/contact.
When I called the woman on the other line was confused at first, but then asked her supervisor and she said it is in fact a charity run by Virgin Mobile. The woman on the other line seemed to think it was not a big deal since the kids keep their underwear/bikinis on! It's like hello, these are KIDS doing a strip tease! A strip tease is to intice the one watching for sex. Why would we want our children on the internet posting themself doing this???
Either some idiot came up with this or a brilliant pedophile who works for the company.
I encourage others to find out the truth for yourself and contact the company to complain.

We strip to gain attention for ourselves, to try to be like everyone else, to have purpose. We need to teach our children love. How to find this happiness within ourselves, not from media and all this garbage that is plastered everywhere perpetrating a life of materialism. We never find happiness from this. We only keep looking when it runs out, when it can't satisfy us anylonger - then depression sinks he, then the cycle keeps going. When is everyone going to start looking at the bigger picture and the REAL purpose we are here on this planet....wake up!!!! 2012 and this world is going to be changed. The the age of spritituality. Every 26,000 years and the occurence happens, next date is Dec 21, 2012. Google it people. Already been scientifically proven that destruction is going to happen. Find your purpose and evolve into something greater than this. We are getting stupider by the day by acting in this manner. Not smarter

Sierra Sky said...We are living in a world growing deeper in depression, materialism, power, greed, and need for acceptance. By acting out this way, kids are showing all of these traits. We flaunt ourselves due to insecurities within ourselves, leading to an outer project to act out in any behaviour to try and receive acceptance from piers and others. This road eventually leads to depression because the void can't be fulfilled by the materialistic items they obtain to gain this acceptance. Then people compete with each other for more materials to show they have more, to dominate one another...leading to power, greed and more acceptance. Depression occurs again because the materialistic goods can't fill their voids in life. I mean come on, when is this world going to wake up and learn how to love each other again and help one another instead of competing. Once you are dead you are dead. You don't take anything with you. but what you did with your life and who you helped is the ultimate goal. This is why we are so unhappy, the worldy values have taken over bodies and we no longer look within, spirititually, the true nature of our being here and evolvement on this planet. WAKE UP!!!! This world is getting dumber and dumber not smarter...

PROTEST THE COMPANY. WHO WAS THE SICKO THAT WANTED THIS IN THE MARKETING DEPARTMENT? TIME FOR HIM TO TAKE A HIKE .

Amanda said...People, your all up in arms over a company trying to do something good in this world, albeit in a bit of a provacative way. When has virgin ever done anything that wasn't provacative? There are terms of service in order to upload these videos. You cannot be under 18 and no nudity is allowed. As far as the people screening these videos...they are mostly female and all work for Virgin. Everyone is freaking out that Virgin is trying to get "kids" to strip. Let us again look at the terms of service. YOU MUST BE 18 TO SUBMIT A VIDEO. 18 year olds are not kids. They are legal, consenting adults.
Also, you CANNOT call virgin yourself. The number that christina listed is the customer service number for the cell phones, and there is like 10 minutes of automated service to get through.
The fact is, these aren't children that are stripping. And no one is naked. They're in bikinis, I see women wearing less then that at the beach on a daily basis. If that is what your freaking out about then the problem isn't virgin. And if your CHILD is willing to strip on camera, then again, the problem isn't Virgin. The problem is your parenting skills and the fact that your CHILD obviously has no self-respect. Do not blame this company for trying to do something so wonderful like help homeless children in a world gone to shit.

Alexa said...Maybe you guys should get your facts straight before slamming this. First of all, if you look at the video's you'll see they all look like college kids, not poor innocent little eight year olds. Second, its not about sex at all! If you look at the rules anything counts, taking a sock off, a scarf, whatever. These videos give internet loving teens something to get creative with, and it all goes to charity! But if you want, you can just donate all your crappy old clothes to poor kids simply because you dont want them any more. We'll all be having fun and giving kids NEW clothes.

Sex is already over-glorified with teens now a days, and 13 year olds now look 23, and they think its a GOOD IDEA to ask those 13 year olds that already look grown, & act like they think they're grown, to STRIP like they were grown?? WHAT THE HELL! I was 13 only 6 years ago! and i can see a HUGEEEEEEEe difference in 13 year olds!!! I mean back when i was 13 kids were acting grown, now its just out of control. Virgin Mobile should be punched in the face for this stupid a** idea. HORRIBLEEEEE! Great, they have offically given thousandsssssss of teens ANOTHER reason to think sex is cool and dressing like an adult whore at 13 is COOL. and etc etc. GAH!

Laura said...Isn't that pedophilia? If someone did that to your kids in school you would call the police. But because it's big corporation promo it's OK
This society is just getting scurvier and scurvier.
But it's OK,their doing it to help the homeless. My kids spend less than 5 hours a week on the computer(ages 6,17)These days kids are on too much and they are getting fat and lazy.I find most parents don't even monitor their kids movements. And now this.
Thank god this country can still shock me...although I sense the numbness setting in..................

Also, WTF was Virgin thinking?

"The airports looking at me and my kids naked" - ah yeah, you're a bright, well adjusted indiviual.
I think that pedophiles don't need Virgin Wireless to give them cheap entertainment like this, they know where the good stuff is.
Its sad that everyone just went off on the weirdest directions about this. It was a really dumb idea, but people, I don't think everything points to pedophiles and sex offenders. Did you know that if you shine your shoes too much and wear a skirt, people can see your underwear??????
Brings to mind a line from a movie that I've never seen but seems to fit here "Idiots!!" (and that was meant for the comment section)

Brian said...This is absolutely HORRIBLE! It is WRONG to ask any child to do anything that would compromise the purity that comes with youth. I don't care how anyone tries to justify this, it is disgusting. What is wrong with this world? Anyone who has any kind of a moral compass would agree that this is disgusting, and needs to be STOPPED IMMEDIATELY.
